history

Before founding

One of the first football games took place in Toronto in 1859 between the St. George's Society and a team of Irish emigrants. Other games were played in New Westminster in 1862 and in Victoria, British Columbia in 1865 . The first game played under modern football rules was in Toronto in 1876, after the Dominion Football Association was founded. This association was also the first football association to be founded outside of Great Britain .

In 1880 the Western Football Association was founded in Berlin (today: Kitchener, Ontario ). This made the sport more and more popular, especially in southern Ontario. The first soccer teams were founded around 1900.

In 1885 and 1886 there were games for the first time between teams from the Western Football Association and the American Football Association, the unofficial federation of the United States .

In the following years other local football associations were founded, for example the Manitoba Football Association was founded in 1896 and the Ontario Football Association in 1901. The Galt Football Club was sent to represent the Western Football Association and Canada for the 1904 Summer Olympics . The team was able to prevail against two school teams from the USA and win the gold medal.

In 1905 the Saskatchewan Football Association was founded. In 1911 the Province of Quebec Football Association and the Alberta Football Association followed.

founding

On May 24, 1912, the Dominion of Canada Football Association was founded in Toronto by representatives of the regional associations. On December 31, 1912, the association became a member of FIFA. In 1926 the first national league was founded, the Canadian National Soccer League. In it mostly teams from Ontario and Québec played .

On June 21, 1926, the DCFA left FIFA. They followed the British federation, which was in a dispute over the payment of amateur footballers with FIFA. It existed until 1997. Since 2006 there is the Canadian Soccer League , which is the national league of Canada. However, this is administered by the Ontario Soccer Association.

In 1957 the association rejoined FIFA. It was not until eleven years later that the Canadian national soccer team played their first official international match. It was played against Australia on June 7, 1924 and lost 3-2.

There are currently three Canadian clubs playing in the top North American football league Major League Soccer : Toronto FC (since 2007), Vancouver Whitecaps (since 2011) and Montreal Impact (since 2012). Two Canadian teams currently play in the second highest North American soccer league, the North American Soccer League , FC Edmonton and Ottawa Fury .

In 2008 the Canadian Championship was created. Five Canadian teams, Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps, Montreal Impact, Ottawa Fury and FC Edmonton, play a starting place for the CONCACAF Champions League .

In March 2011, it was decided that Canada would host the women's soccer world championship in 2015 , which will then be held for the first time with 24 teams.
