The FC Edmonton is a Canadian football - Franchise of the Canadian Premier League from Edmonton , Alberta . The team was founded in 2010 and began playing in the North American Soccer League in the 2011 season .
Due to the uncertain situation of the North American Soccer League, the team switched to the Canadian Premier League, which will start playing in the 2019 season.
The home games are played at Clarke Stadium . The team colors are blue and white.
history
founding
Edmonton FC was founded in February 2010 by Canadians Tom and Dave Fath. In its first year, Edmonton built its administrative and athletic structures. Players were signed and the first test matches were held. The club played their first game on June 16, 2010 against Montreal Impact and won 3-0. Other games took place against US and Canadian teams. Encounters against international opponents such as Portsmouth FC and CSD Colo-Colo were also held.
In December 2010, the club's first coach, Dwight Lodeweges , and his assistant moved to Japan. The new coach was Harry Sinkgraven from the Netherlands . He was sacked in late September 2012 and in late November 2012, Scottish- born former Canadian international Colin Miller became the new head coach.
First season
The first competitive game took place on April 9, 2011 against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers . Edmonton won the game 2-1. Shaun Saiko scored the first goal for Edmonton FC in a competitive game.
As one of four Canadian professional soccer teams, FC Edmonton also took part in the 2011 Canadian Championship . In the first round you played against last year's champions Toronto FC . They lost 0: 3 on April 27 and 0: 1 on May 4 and were eliminated.

The home games have been played at Clarke Stadium since 2012 . The stadium, which was actually designed for Canadian football, was home to the NASL team Edmonton Drillers as early as 1982 .
In 2011 the home games were played on Foote Field, which is located on the grounds of the University of Alberta .
For games with a greater audience interest, the team can move to the 60,081 seat Commonwealth Stadium . This was first done on April 27, 2011 in the Canadian Championship game against Toronto FC.

The FC Edmonton Supporters Group was formed in 2010 from members of the Canadian National Soccer Supporters Group. This happened in connection with the fact that Edmonton had won the bid for a football franchise in the NASL.

The main rival of Edmonton FC is the Ottawa Fury . If both the Canadian Championship and the league meet, the "All-Canadian Derby" is played.

Edmonton Academy FC
The franchise's youth work has been organized at the FC Edmonton Academy since January 2012. In September 2013, the Alberta Soccer Association and Edmonton FC agreed to partner with them to set up two development centers in Calgary and Edmonton for young soccer players. Here the youth players can complete their school education parallel to the training.
