Lars Justin Hirschfeld (born October 17, 1978 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian soccer goalkeeper with German roots.

Family and birth

Hirschfeld's father Friedrich-Wilhelm comes from Plettenberg and emigrated to Canada in 1972; his mother comes from the Görlitz area . Hirschfeld was born in Edmonton in 1978.

Career

Hirschfeld began playing soccer with the Edmonton Drillers , where he was an indoor soccer player. In 1998 he came to Europe from Canada with Kevin McKenna , who had previously played for the Calgary Dinos , and signed with Energie Cottbus . In Brandenburg, however, there was only one place left on the bench. After the 1999/00 season he moved back to Canada to Calgary Storm . Here he stayed, interrupted by half a season with the Vancouver Whitecaps (2001), until 2002.

After Hirschfeld had been voted the tournament's best goalkeeper at the 2002 CONCACAF Gold Cup , he was signed by the Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur . However, the Canadian did not get a chance at Spurs and was loaned out to Luton Town after six months and then to Gillingham FC .

For the 2004/05 season Hirschfeld signed a contract with Dundee United in Scotland . After half a season he moved to Leicester City in the English second division . Here he was again a substitute goalkeeper and completed only one game on the last day of the season in the meaningless game at Plymouth Argyle .

After he had never been able to assert himself in Great Britain , Hirschfeld went to Norway to Tromsø IL in 2005 . With Tromsø he played in the 2005 UEFA Cup , where he played well against Esbjerg fB and Galatasaray Istanbul to qualify and make it into the group stage. The goalkeeper made a name for himself in Norway in Tromsø. In 2006 he moved to Rosenborg Trondheim and became Norwegian champions , displacing Espen Johnsen out of the gate.

In January 2008 he moved to CFR Cluj in Romania and won the Romanian Championship and the Romanian Cup with the club at the end of the 2007/08 season. A season later, Cluj defended the cup title. Hirschfeld was unable to assert himself in Cluj and only made five league appearances in a year and a half.

In the summer of 2009, Hirschfeld left Romania and went back to Germany, where he again signed with Energie Cottbus , who had previously been relegated from the Bundesliga. He was hired as the successor to the regular keeper Gerhard Tremmel , who was willing to emigrate . Hirschfeld was in goal in the first competitive game of the season, the first round game in the DFB Cup. After Tremmel hadn't found a new club and stayed in Cottbus, coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz set it as number 1 again. Hirschfeld had to sit on the bench for the first second division game. After half a year in Cottbus, in which he remained without league use, Hirschfeld moved on January 15, 2010 to the Norwegian first division club Vålerenga Oslo . At Vålerenga, he couldn't get past Michael Langer and Sascha Burchert in the 2015 season , so he left the club at the end of the season after six years. He moved to KFUM-Kameratene Oslo in the second Norwegian league , where he also works as a goalkeeping coach.

useful information

Hirschfeld has both German and Canadian citizenship. Due to his German citizenship, Hirschfeld does not burden the contingent of non-European foreigners in European leagues.
