Kevin James McKenna (born January 21, 1980 in Calgary , Alberta ) is a former Canadian - Scottish football player and current coach .

From the age of 15 to 18, McKenna, the son of Scottish parents, was active in the sports team at the University of Calgary, the Calgary Dinos . In 1998 he moved to Germany for the second division soccer team Energie Cottbus . On April 23, 1999 (27th matchday) he made his debut in German professional football when he came on for Rudi Vata in the 74th minute in the 3-0 home win over SSV Ulm 1846 . He only made three appearances in two seasons. In the year of his team's promotion to the Bundesliga , he was only used twice, he made his debut there on August 12, 2000 (1st matchday) in the 1: 3 defeat at Werder Bremen .

From 2001 to 2005 he played 121 times for the Scottish first division club Heart of Midlothian and scored 21 goals.

For the 2005/06 season he returned to Cottbus and contributed with ten goals in 34 games to the renewed promotion to the top division, in which he was then used 29 times, but remained without scoring. During this season he was the successor to Gregg Berhalter team captain of the Cottbus team. Since the 2007/08 season he played for 1. FC Cologne . On December 13, 2008 (17th matchday) he scored his first Bundesliga goal in a 2-1 away win over VfL Bochum . On May 5, 2014 McKenna announced his retirement on June 30, 2014 after his contract in Cologne had expired.

After seven games for the U-23 selection, he made his debut on May 27, 2000 in the game against Trinidad and Tobago for the Canadian national football team , whose captain he was meanwhile.

In 2002 he was voted into the best team of the CONCACAF Gold Cup .

Trainer

Since the end of his active career, McKenna worked as an assistant coach in the youth division of 1. FC Köln. First he trained as an assistant coach for the U-17s from 2014 to December 2017. He then worked with Markus Daun as assistant coach under head coach Stefan Ruthenbeck on an interim basis in the Bundesliga at 1. FC Köln , before he became André Pawlak's assistant coach for the second team at 1. FC Köln in summer 2018. After Pawlak succeeded Markus Anfang in the 2nd Bundesliga professional team in Cologne at the end of April 2019 , McKenna took over the head coach position of the second team in the Regionalliga West on an interim basis. In July 2019 McKenna resigned from 1. FC Köln because he saw no prospect of a position as head coach in the youth sector there for the foreseeable future.

Since September 19, 2019 he has been assistant coach at 1. FC Kaiserslautern under the new head coach Boris Schommers .

Personal

He also works as a football commentator for Fox Sports 2 television channel . McKenna has been in the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame since April 12, 2019 . His sons play in the youth teams of 1. FC Köln.
