Stefan Ruthenbeck (born April 19, 1972 in Cologne ) is a German football coach .
Player career
Ruthenbeck grew up in Cologne-Ostheim from the age of six and later in Horrem near Kerpen . In his youth he played for 1.FC Quadrath-Ichendorf , later in their senior team. As an active player, he moved to SpVgg Oberaußem-Fortuna in 1991 in the Mittelrhein Association . After several appointments in the U21 Middle Rhine selection, he went to FV Bad Honnef in 1993 , then to FV Rheinbrohl, for which he played until 1999, before moving to TuS Mayen in the then fourth-class Oberliga Südwest in the 1999/2000 season.
Coaching career
2004 to 2010: TuS Mayen
At TuS Mayen, Ruthenbeck also began his coaching career by acting as a player coach from summer 2004 . He had previously won the Rhineland Cup, which entitles the player to participate in the DFB Cup, with the league team. The team therefore competed in the first main round of the DFB Cup against Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart in August 2004 , to which they were clearly defeated 6-0. In the following years, Ruthenbeck succeeded again and again, with a team that was constantly rejuvenated due to the low financial possibilities, to keep the league.
In April 2010, Ruthenbeck successfully completed the ten-month training as a football teacher at the Hennes-Weisweiler Academy in Cologne , which he completed together with former professionals such as Markus Babbel , Christian Ziege and Torsten Lieberknecht . Just a few weeks later, Ruthenbeck was again in the spotlight when he instructed his team on matchday 30 of the 2009/10 season in the final phase of the game of his TuS Mayen against SV Alemannia Waldalgesheim to allow the Waldalgesheimers to equalize 3: 3 because the Mayener's 3-2 opening goal immediately before had only come about in violation of fair play . Ruthenbeck was then awarded the German Fair Is More Prize by the DFB . At the end of the season, TuS Mayen rose two points behind SpVgg EGC Wirges as seventeenth in the table in the Rhineland League.
2010 to 2012: SpVgg EGC Wirges
After a total of eleven years at the club, Ruthenbeck moved to SpVgg EGC Wirges after Mayener's relegation , which he led to eleventh place in the table the following season. In the summer of 2011 he turned down an offer from TuS Koblenz , who had been relegated to the fourth-class regional league, to become head coach there. In the following season he was able to improve the placement again with the team; the club occupied tenth place in the table at the end of the season.
2012 to 2015: VfR Aalen
In the summer of 2012 Ruthenbeck moved to the second division promoted VfR Aalen , where he became head of the newly organized youth center after the promotion. In addition, he took over the training of the U23 acting second team of the club, which had previously been relegated to the seventh-class state league Württemberg. During the preparation for the 2012/13 season, he was in charge of training for the professional team for three weeks in July 2012 when the actual head coach Ralph Hasenhüttl was absent due to illness. With the second team he succeeded in the following season, among other things, a series of 14 wins in a row, so that the team at the end of the season with eleven points ahead of second place and a goal difference of 94:33 goals succeeded in the immediate promotion to the association league.
After Hasenhüttl's resignation at the end of the season, Ruthenbeck was his successor as head coach of the professional team playing in the 2nd Bundesliga for the new 2013/14 season . In the 2014/15 season, the team was relegated to the 3rd division under his leadership.
2015 to 2016: SpVgg Greuther Fürth
For the 2015/16 season, Ruthenbeck moved as the new head coach to the second division club SpVgg Greuther Fürth . He signed a two-year contract. On November 21, 2016, he was released for moderate success. Janos Radoki was appointed his successor .
Since 2017: 1. FC Köln
In July 2017, his engagement with the A-youth of 1. FC Köln began . On December 3, 2017, he took over the Bundesliga team, which was in last place in the table with three points after 14 match days, from the dismissed Peter Stöger until the winter break. On December 16, 2017, under Ruthenbeck, FC achieved their first Bundesliga win of the season with a 1-0 home win against VfL Wolfsburg. On December 20, 2017, he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2018. On April 12, 2018, 1. FC Köln announced that Ruthenbeck would no longer be the coach of the professional squad in the 2018/2019 season, regardless of relegation. He was followed by Markus Anfang . On May 14, 2018, the club announced that Ruthenbeck would again take over the Rhinelander U-19s for the 2018/19 season.

Ruthenbeck is married to a woman from Königswinter for the second time and has three children. Before moving to VfR Aalen, he made coaching his main occupation, he was a chemical technician at a chemical company in Königswinter for 17 years .
