Weight adjustment "al pezzo" and "al marco"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The terms al pezzo and al marco describe two different ways to adjust and check the weight of a coin . The weight check almost always took place before the actual embossing process and was carried out on the flint . The names come from the Italian and mean "on the piece" (al pezzo) and "on the marrow " (al marco).

"Al pezzo"

With this weight adjustment, the coin's flint is adjusted to the prescribed weight. The weight of each individual coin is adjusted to the target weight and thus guarantees a uniform weight. However, this process is complex and time-consuming.

"Al marco"

When adjusting al marco, it is not the individual weight but the average weight of the coins that is checked. A certain total number of coins must correspond to the desired and specified weight. This method also explains the sometimes large differences in weight of the individual coins. For example, 240 pfennigs are struck for one pound weighing 367 g.
