Margaret Bailes
Margaret Bailes (born January 23, 1951 in New York City ) is a former American athlete and Olympic champion.
At the age of 16 , Bailes , who started for the Oregon Track Club , finished fifth in the 200-meter run at the 1967 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) championships . The following year, she became AAU champion in the 100-meter run , setting the existing world record of 11.1 seconds. Over 200 meters she was second behind Wyomia Tyus . In the US elimination competitions, Bailes qualified as the winner in the 200-meter run and as second over 100 meters for participation in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.
There, together with Barbara Ferrell , Mildrette Netter and Wyomia Tyus , she won the gold medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay ahead of Cuba and the Soviet Union. The US team set a world record in the preliminary round with 43.4 seconds (electronic timekeeping: 43.50 seconds) and increased it to 42.8 seconds (electronic timekeeping: 42.88 seconds) in the final. In addition, Bailes finished fifth in the 100-meter run and seventh in the 200-meter run. At the end of the season, at the age of only 17, she ended her short and successful sporting career.
