Sheila Ann Echols (born October 2, 1964 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is a former American athlete and Olympic champion .

After Sheila Echols had exceeded the 6-meter mark in the long jump with wind support in 1982 , two years followed in which she hardly competed. In 1985 it increased to 6.57 meters; the following year to 6.69 meters. Also in 1986, she managed to increase to 11.15 seconds in the 100-meter run . In 1987 she improved over 100 meters to 11.09 seconds and in the long jump to 6.94 meters, the largest distance of her career. At the Pan American Games in 1987, she won the US 4-by-100-meter relay , at the 1987 World Championships in Rome she finished eleventh in the long jump. In 1988 she set her best over 100 meters in 10.83 seconds. She won the US championship in 1988 both in the long jump and over 100 meters, in the eliminations for the Olympic team, she finished second in the long jump and fourth in the 100-meter run. In Seoul at the Olympic Games , she was eliminated in the long jump qualification, but with the US relay in the cast Alice Brown , Sheila Echols, Florence Griffith-Joyner and Evelyn Ashford , she won Olympic gold in 41.98 seconds before the relay from the GDR .
