Ethel Smith (athlete)

Ethel Smith ( Ethel M. Smith ; born July 5, 1907 in Toronto , Ontario , † December 31, 1979 ibid) was a Canadian athlete and Olympic champion .

In 1928 Smith traveled to the Amsterdam Olympics . Prior to the competition, the press dubbed the small group of Canadian female athletes The Matchless Six . Smith won gold in the 4 x 100 meter relay together with Fanny Rosenfeld , Florence Bell and Myrtle Cook , as well as the bronze medal in the 100 meters behind the American Betty Robinson (gold) and her friend, the Canadian Fanny Rosenfeld (silver).
