The Clarke Stadium is a stadium in the Canadian city of Edmonton in the province of Alberta . It was primarily used for Canadian football in the past and is now also used as a football stadium . The sports facility is located in the immediate vicinity of the Commonwealth Stadium, which was inaugurated in 1978 .
history
Clarke Stadium was built in 1938 and named after former Edmonton Mayor Joseph Clarke. Originally the facility had 20,000 spaces. From 1949 to 1978, the Edmonton Eskimos Canadian football team used the stadium. Then the team moved to the Commonwealth Stadium. In 2000 the old stadium was demolished and rebuilt as another sports facility for the 2001 World Athletics Championships . It was u. a. the natural grass is replaced by an artificial grass . Since 2012, the facility serves as a home ground of the NASL - Franchise FC Edmonton . With 5,000 seats, it is NASL's smallest stadium. Furthermore, the Edmonton Huskies and the Edmonton Wildcats of the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL) are located at Clarke Stadium.
