Francesca Kirby (born June 29, 1993 in Reading ) is an English national soccer player .
Career
society
Kirby began her career in the offspring of Reading FC and played with them from the 2014 season in the newly created FA WSL 2 . For the 2015 season she was the first player in her club to be awarded a professional contract. After the 2015 World Cup, she moved to the first division club Chelsea LFC , with whom she immediately won the English championship and FA Women's Cup double . Your team was thus directly qualified for the round of 32 of the 2015/16 UEFA Women's Champions League . In that, the Chelsea Ladies prevailed with two wins (1-0 and 3-0) against the Scottish champions Glasgow City LFC , with Kirby scoring one goal in both games. But then they lost twice against the German runner-up VfL Wolfsburg in the second round .
The following season , the Chelsea Ladies were runner-up and qualified again for the 2016/17 UEFA Women's Champions League . Kirby only made seven league appearances, but scored five goals, including two goals for a 2-0 away win at local rivals Arsenal and the winning goal for a 2-1 win against Sunderland. In the Champions League this time they met the Wolfsburg women in the round of sixteen. After a 3-0 home defeat, Wolfsburg scored 1-1, but this was not enough to make it to the next round. Kirby only sat on the bench in the home game.
In 2017 the FA WSL was switched from a summer season to the rhythm of most other European leagues and the 2017 season was held as a "Spring Series" from February to May with eight games per team. The Chelsea Ladies finished first after these eight games thanks to the better goal difference over Manchester City. Kirby contributed six goals in five games.
The new season started in September 2017 and ended with the championship for Chelsea in May 2018. Kirby was only absent once during the season and scored seven goals. At the same time, the ladies took part in the 2017/18 UEFA Women's Champions League . They eliminated the German runner-up FC Bayern Munich in the round of 16 with a 1-0 home game and a 1-2 away defeat due to the away goals rule . This was followed by two wins in the round of 16 against the Swedish runner-up FC Rosengård and two wins in the quarter-finals against the French runner-up HSC Montpellier . In the semifinals it was the last stop with two defeats against the Wolfsburg team. Kirby was used in all eight games, scoring four goals.
In the 2018/19 UEFA Women's Champions League , Bosnian champions SFK 2000 Sarajevo were eliminated in the round of 32 , the third of the Italian championship AC Florence in the round of 16 and French runners-up Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals . The tour of Europe ended in the semi-finals, where Chelsea failed at French champions Olympique Lyon due to a less scored goal. Kirby was used in all eight games and scored five goals, including three in the 6-0 win in Florence. The season ended in third place in the Super League, missing the 2019/20 UEFA Women's Champions League . Personally, it was her best season, because with nine goals she was eighth best goalscorer in the league and the second best of her club.
National team
Kirby made his debut for England's U-23 national team in 2013. In May 2014 she was appointed to the squad of the English senior team for the first time and made her debut for them on August 3, 2014 in a friendly against Sweden . In this game, Kirby also scored her first goal in the national shirt.
In qualifying for the 2015 World Cup , she was only used in the penultimate game in a 4-0 win in Wales and was substituted on in the 63rd minute for record national player Fara Williams . With the victory, the English women qualified for the World Cup in Canada ahead of schedule . At the World Cup , she was the second youngest English player in the three group games and scored the first goal in the 2-1 win against Mexico . She was also in the star eleven in the 2-1 victory in the quarter-finals, but was immediately substituted after the 1-0 for Norway . In the semifinals, where the English were eliminated with an own goal in stoppage time against defending champions Japan, and in the game for third place, where they won against Germany for the first time , it was not used.
In qualifying for the 2017 European Championship , she made two appearances and scored two goals in an 8-0 win against Estonia . At the EM, she was used in the three group games and scored a goal in the 2-0 win against Spain . She was also used in the semi-final defeat against the hosts .
In qualifying for the 2019 World Cup , she scored two goals in six games and qualified with her team as group winners for the World Cup in France.
In March 2019 she won the SheBelieves Cup 2019 and was used in the three games. Without being used in the April test matches, she was nominated for the World Cup in France on May 8th . At the World Cup she was used in six games and was only not used in the third group game against Japan . In the game for third place against Sweden , she scored with her first World Cup goal to make it 1: 2. Since there were no more goals after that, the English women had to be content with fourth place.
