2016/17: Clubs of Division 1 (yellow dots, name in bold) and Division 2 Féminine, which is divided into two groups (A: red = northwest, B: green = southeast)

The 2016/17 season of Division 1 Féminine was the 43rd staging of the French women's football championship since the official recognition of women's football in 1970 by the FFF, the football association of France , and the first staging in the 1974/75 season . The Division 1 Féminine called league is in pure League mode played in a group consisting of a single group, comprising twelve teams, national top division; in this mode it is the 25th championship. The defending champions were the women of Olympique Lyon , who also finished successfully this year.

The season only started on September 11, 2016 due to the participation of the French women in the Olympic football tournament and should end on May 27, 2017. The last matchday was brought forward to May 25th so that the two French Champions League finalists Lyon and Paris can use a whole week of preparation for this season highlight. There was a winter break between December 18 and January 15; However, the first division will have to intervene in the national cup competition on January 8th . In addition, the U-20 World Cup taking place in November 2016 had to be taken into account for the schedule .

Qualification and mode of competition

For the eligibility to participate, only the performance of the women's teams in the previous season is taken into account; Qualified are the nine best-placed teams of the previous season as well as three promoted teams, who each finished their group in Division 2 Féminine as first in the table. The following twelve participants start this season:

For Bordeaux and Marseille, the participation marks their first division debut, for Metz it is the second season at this level.

The championship is played in a double round of points in which each participant competes in home and away games against each other. It applies after almost two decades in which the " modified three-point rule ", which was also common in French amateur football well into the 21st century, applies with four points for a win, two for a draw and one for a defeat suffered on the field found, for the first time, the internationally common three-point rule. In the event of a tie, the direct comparison first and, if necessary, then the better total goal difference , if there is still a tie, the higher number of hits, if applicable, is decisive. At the end of the season, from this season onwards, only the two bottom of the table have to be relegated, who will be replaced for the coming season by two promoted players - the winners of the two groups in the second division.

The French champions as well as the runners-up in Division 1 Féminine qualify for the women's European Cup competition of the following season .

Change of club

Lyon had to accept the biggest bloodletting before the start of the season because three main pillars left the club: Louisa Nécib (end of career) and Amandine Henry (move to the Portland Thorns ) after seven and Lotta Schelin (back to Sweden) after eight years belong to the squad of Blue-red no longer on. Were newly committed dzsenifer marozsán from 1. FFC Frankfurt , Andrea Norheim ( Klepp IL ) and Paris SG Caroline Seger , Jessica Houara , Kenza Dali and kheira hamraoui . The third goalkeeper was New Zealand national player Erin Nayler - she was handed over to second division Grenoble Foot at the turn of the year - and from January Alex Morgan from Orlando Pride , Kadeisha Buchanan ( Vaughan Azzurri , Canada) and Josephine Henning ( Arsenal FC ) to Lyon.

At Lyon's main competitor PSG, the coach changed after four years: Patrice Lair replaces Farid Benstiti , as he did at Olympique Lyon in 2010. This replacement was also associated with a considerable personnel change, because in addition to Seger, Houara, Dali and Hamraoui, Lisa Dahlkvist , Rosana , Ann-Katrin Berger and Fatmire Alushi also left the club. The best- known newcomers are the goal scorer Sarah Palacin from Saint-Étienne, Verónica Boquete from Bayern Munich and Irene Paredes from Athletic Bilbao , goalkeeper Loes Geurts from Kopparbergs / Göteborg FC , Eve Périsset from Lyon, Aminata Diallo (Guingamp) and for January and February 2017 Amandine Henry , the Canadian international Ashley Lawrence , the Brazilian Formiga and the Macedonian Nataša Andonova . But Erika ended her career at this point.

Montpellier reported the departure of Andressa Alves (to FC Barcelona ) and Rumi Utsugi (to the USA) as well as the commitment of Clarisse Le Bihan from Guingamp as changes. In January 2017, Stina Blackstenius from Linköpings FC joined them. Juvisy has signed two young talents , Marina Makanza and Clara Matéo from ESOF La Roche and Estelle Cascarino from Lyon, while the experienced Amélie Coquet and Nelly Guilbert hung up their football boots. In addition, Janice Cayman left France for the USA, from where she returned to the D1F - to Montpellier - during the winter break. Finally, Guingamp is also marked by major changes, because in addition to Le Bihan, Marine Dafeur , Aminata Diallo , Mélissa Plaza and five other players also left Brittany . After all, Evelyn Nwabuoku, a Nigerian World Cup participant, took the path there . (As of February 1, 2017)

At the start of the season, Sarah M'Barek , in her fourth season with Guingamp, was again the only female coach in France's elite class.

(a) Paris had won the game in Albi 4-0 on matchday one, but with Sarah Palacin a player came on who was eligible to play but was not on the score sheet . The responsible commission then rated the game 3-0 for Albi in accordance with the regulations and deducted an additional penalty point from PSG. The capital city club appealed against this decision and, after its rejection, turned to the highest instance of French sports jurisdiction, the CNOSF . He had confirmed the legality of the FFF decision in mid-April, whereupon PSG brought an action in an ordinary court, which was not successful.

In the top duel on the eleventh match day of the first half of the season, PSG managed to inflict their first league defeat in Lyon in almost three years ; even then it was Paris that had defeated the subscription master - at that time even abroad. With that, the capital city women went into the short break at the turn of the year as leaders of the table - and as far as the goal balance is concerned, with a crisp white vest. After the association punished Paris with a point deduction for the game in Albi, PSG gambled away their hopes for the title in the new year with two defeats in Montpellier and Marseille early on. Lyon, on the other hand, were arithmetically established champions after matchday 20.
Paris and Lyon met three times at the end of the season within two and a half weeks: on May 13th in Lyon for the second leg in Division 1, on May 19th for the national cup final and on June 1st for the
European Cup final .

Behind Lyon, who won their eleventh title in a row, Montpellier qualified as runner-up for the first time in eight years for the Champions League; Juvisy finished fifth, which was the worst performance of the black and white since the creation of the league. This time, two of the three newcomers held the class, of which Marseille in particular was able to convince as fourth in the table. Only two other newcomers had done so well in the history of Division 1: Racing Saint-Étienne also finished fourth in 2007/08, and the Toulouse OAC even made it to runner-up in the mid-1990s. In a “heart-stopping final”, promoted Bordeaux, who had taken 14 of their 16 points away, saved themselves on the last day of the game with a draw in Paris, which meant that AS Saint-Étienne had to accompany the third newcomer FC Metz to the second division.

For the following season , the two absolute league beginners FCF Val d'Orge and OSC Lille will be promoted from Division 2 Féminine .
