French women's football championship 1977/78

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The French women's football championship 1977/78 was the fourth play of this title after the official recognition of women's football by the French Football Association in 1970. The comparable competitions between the world wars remained unofficial, especially since they were organized by an all-women sports association.

The championship 1977/78 - there was no top division in France before 1992 - was played in a mixture of group play - and knockout mode ; In order to take part in the nationwide final round, the women's teams had to qualify at the regional level beforehand. The defending champion was Stade Reims , whose women's team advanced again to the final, but failed in it at AS Étrœungt .

Preliminary round

The 20 qualified teams were divided into four groups of five from a regional point of view, in which each club competed against each other in a return match. The two best in the group reached the quarter-finals. In the event of a tie - the two-point rule applied  - the better goal difference was decisive.

No individual results or tables for this round can be found in the sources used.

Quarter finals

Quarter-, semi-finals and final were played in home and away matches , although the away goals rule did not apply at the time; rather, if there was a tie after the second leg - without extra time - a penalty shoot-out was carried out to determine the winner.
The quarter-finals took place on March 5 and 19, 1978.
