RC Saint-Etienne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Racing Club Saint-Étienne, or RC Saint-Étienne for short, was a purely women's football club from the French city of Saint-Étienne , which existed for more than three decades.

history

In the summer of 1977, the AS Saint-Étienne presidium decided to dissolve its women's football department at the end of June. The women then founded their own club and called it the Racing Club . The new club kept the club colors green and white. In recent years, Racing's players have played their home games at the Stade Léon-Nautin , which has space for around 1,500 spectators.

The Racing Club dissolved in mid-2009 after more than 50 players and the club's general assembly agreed to return to the “big” local rival ASSE, where they hoped to get better support thanks to its financial strength.

League affiliation and achievements

From the 1980/81 season until the middle of the decade, Saint-Étiennes soccer players reached the final round of the French women's championship four times, which at the time was still held in a mixture of group and knockout mode . In this, however, they were eliminated in the group games of the regional preliminary round.

Racing then disappeared for a long time into lower regional leagues; Only in 2004 did his women gain promotion to a third division season, which was followed by promotion to the second division only twelve months later. The RCSE stayed there for two seasons, then even qualified for Division 1 Féminine , France's highest women's league. In their first season ( 2007/08 ) in the “upper house of football” the newcomers surprised with a fourth place in the final ranking, which they owed in particular to their home strength. Racing benefited from the fact that the head coach relied on young, talented players who were given the chance of regular premier league appearances in Saint-Étienne. The following year - the club's last - they only finished seventh in the table, but again had nothing to do with relegation.

In the national cup competition , which was only introduced in the 2001/02 season , Racings women were in the national main round from the 2005/06 season until the club was dissolved. In 2007 (still as a second division) and 2009 they moved into the round of the last eight women's clubs.
