Falmer is a small village and Civil Parish with about 280 inhabitants in the Lewes District of County East Sussex in England , between Lewes and Brighton .
history
Before the Norman conquest of England, Falmer's fief was held by Wilton Abbey. After the conquest, most of it was given to Gundred, wife of William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey. In the 11th century the village was variously called Falemela, Falemere or Felesmere. Edward II visited Falmer in 1324.
Charles I granted the fief to Edward Ditchfield in 1628 or 1629. He sold it to William Craven, who lost it because of his support for the king during the English Civil War .
Because of Falmer's proximity to the city of Brighton and Hove , the parish was largely influenced by the development of its large neighbor in the twentieth century. It has been home to the University of Sussex since the 1960s and in the 1990s the former Brighton Polytechnic Falmer became a branch of the University of Brighton.
City administration
At the local level, Falmer is governed by the local council. His area of responsibility includes sidewalks, street lighting, playgrounds and smaller building applications . There are five seats available in the municipal council, which were elected in the May 2007 election without opposing candidates.
