Christian Hess

Christian Heß (born January 27, 1803 in Kublank near Stargard in Pomerania , † May 15, 1874 in Stettin ) was a German school teacher , botanist and weather observer .

Life

After attending the village school, Hess, the son of a farmer, went to the Gröning Gymnasium in Stargard in Pomerania . He then studied at the University of Halle , at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin and at the University of Greifswald . In 1829 he became a teacher at the Marienstiftsgymnasium in Stettin . In 1833 he became rector of the suburban community school in Stettin, from which the Otto school emerged in 1835. Until his death, Hess was the rector of the Otto School.

In addition to his official activities, Heß devoted himself to botany and weather observation . He published several papers in both areas. He was a co-founder and board member of the Entomological Association in Stettin .

The Szczecin historian Gottfried von Bülow describes Hess in the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie (1880) as "a poetic, religious disposition, of great mildness and low demands, little concern for fame from outside".

family

In 1833 Heß married Alwine Graßmann, daughter of the Szczecin high school professor Justus Günther Graßmann , who died in 1834. Through their marriage, the Szczecin high school professor Hermann Graßmann and the publisher and writer Robert Graßmann became his brothers-in-law. Georg Hess emerged from the marriage and became the high school director in Oels and Rendsburg .

In 1837 he married Marie Schultz, daughter of a Stettin pastor, in his second marriage.
