Max Kurnik (born November 1, 1819 in Santomischel , † April 8, 1881 in Breslau ) was an editor , theater critic and writer in Breslau.

Life

Max Kurnik was one of the leading left-wing liberal journalists in Wroclaw from around the middle of the 19th century. In 1851 he founded the first telegraph office in Silesia. He worked for the Schlesische Zeitung and later for the Breslauer Zeitung as a theater and music critic. From 1872 he headed the Silesian Press , which was published by Salo Schottländer . He was a close friend of Karl von Holtei .

Alexander Moszkowski reported in his autobiography about Kurnik's apparently rather conservative taste in music:

“The famous Leopold Damrosch wielded the baton, and he gave us a vague idea of symphonic classicism. These were, however, overwhelmed by the orchestral adventures that Damrosch, as an ultra-progressive, placed in the foreground. He brought the futurisms of Liszt and Berlioz, and when he once let loose a festival music by Hans von Bronsart on us, it was taken for granted that this clay terrain was essentially dominated by the devil. We were encouraged in this by our house oracle of the Silesian press, whose main representative Max Kurnik stood in the odor of infallibility. And there we read it in black and white that such festive music would only be appropriate when the cannibals were slaughtering people. Now we were standing there completely justified with our many-handed drumming, which we had called in a drastic generalization "make a symphony". "
