In the draw on November 8, 2016, Italy was assigned to Pot 3. Italy was drawn into Group B and met Russia in the first game of the only group without a newcomer to the European Championship , then Olympic champions Germany and Sweden . There were two wins, four draws and 15 defeats in 21 games against Sweden. The last time they met each other was on July 16, 2013 in the last European Championship preliminary round and Italy lost 3-1 to the hosts. The last win against Sweden was on June 26, 2004 in qualifying for the EM 2005 when the Swedes were already qualified. Against Germany, the record is negative: in previous 26 games there were four wins, eight draws and 14 defeats. The last game between the two was the EM quarter-finals of the last EM, which Italy lost 1-0. The last win against Germany was on March 14, 2007 in the game for 7th place in the Algarve Cup 2007 and was the last international match of the current German national coach Steffi Jones . Against Russia, however, the record was positive: in seven games before the draw, there were four wins (the last four games, which all ended 2-0) and three defeats. The two also met in the first game at the four-nation tournament in Brazil in December and Italy won 3-0. Italy could not continue this and lost at the beginning against the Russians with 1: 2, who won a European Championship game for the first time and equalized the balance against Italy. Against Germany they lost in the second game, so that there was no chance of reaching the knockout round before the third game. After all, the 3-2 win against Sweden was a conciliatory farewell and the first victory at an EM against Sweden. With the end of the final round, the tenure of national coach Antonio Cabrini ended , successor was Milena Bertolini . In addition, captain Melania Gabbiadini ended her international career.
