The official tournaments

World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China

The Italians qualified fourth in the 1991 European Championship for the first women's World Cup . For this they had initially qualified in the European Championship qualification as group runner-up behind Denmark . Two wins against Switzerland , a win and a draw against Spain and a draw after a defeat against Denmark were enough . In the quarter-finals against Sweden , after a 1-1 draw in Sweden, a 0-0 home game was enough to be the only second in the group to reach the European Championship finals and the World Cup due to the away goals rule. At the EM they then lost in the semifinals against Germany with 0: 3 and the game for 3rd place with 1: 2 after extra time against Denmark.

In the People's Republic of China they met on November 17, 1991 in Jiangmen in their first World Cup game against the Republic of China, known as "Chinese Taipei", and won 5-0. Feriana Ferraguzzi scored the first World Cup goal for the Italians and Carolina Morace was the first player ever to score three World Cup goals. In the second game against African champions Nigeria, they then won 1-0. Italy and Germany were already in the quarter-finals when they met in the last group game. Here the European champions got the upper hand and won 2-0. In the quarter-finals, runner-up European champions Norway were the opponents. Norway took the lead twice, but Italy was able to equalize again and again, most recently in the 80th minute so that there was an extension. Here they were defeated by a converted penalty and said goodbye to the World Cup for eight years.

World Cup 1995 in Sweden

Four years later, they failed in the quarter-finals of the 1995 European Championship . In qualifying for this they had prevailed against France , Portugal and Scotland . After four victories, the qualification became tight again, as they only scored 1-1 in France and lost the home game 2-1 to Portugal. In the end, they and the French had 9: 3 points, but still the better goal difference. In the quarter-finals they then failed with two defeats to Norway and were therefore not qualified for the World Cup or the first women's football tournament at the 1996 Olympic Games in which only the eight best teams from the World Cup could participate.

World Cup 1999 in the USA

For the third World Cup, UEFA scheduled qualifying matches for the first time . To date, UEFA is the only continental association that holds separate World Cup qualifiers. Italy met Finland , then France and Switzerland again . Italy did not lose a game this time and only gave up a point in the 0-0 win against France. You were thus directly qualified for the World Cup. Finland runners-up in the group and met Russia in the group runners-up playoffs and lost 2-1 twice, which meant that the Russians qualified for the first time.

In the USA they met European champions Germany in their first game and achieved a 1-1 draw. The second game against South American champions Brazil was lost 2-0. Although they won the last game against Mexico 2-0, they only finished third. And since, after the field of participants increased to 16 teams, the two best thirds in the group did not make it to the quarter-finals, Italy was eliminated as the best third in the group and thus said goodbye to the World Cup for at least 20 years. They also missed the women's soccer tournament at the 2000 Olympic Games , in which Australia's seven best teams from the World Cup were allowed to take part.

2003 World Cup in the USA

The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. Italy met in qualifying on Russia , Iceland and Spain . Italy started qualifying with losses in Iceland and against Russia. After that, both games were won against Spain, but lost in Russia. With a 0-0 home game against Iceland, they also missed second place. Russia qualified directly for the World Cup, Iceland failed in the play-offs of the group runners-up to England , which failed in the play- off finals to France , whereby France qualified for the first time. Italy thus also missed the qualification for the women's soccer tournament at the 2004 Olympic Games , in which, in addition to hosts Greece, only the two best teams from the 2003 World Cup were allowed to participate.

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . Italy met Norway, Ukraine , Serbia and Greece in qualifying . Italy lost both games against Norway and Ukraine, which is why it was only enough for third place, although all other games were won. Since this time only the group winners qualified for the World Cup, only group winners Norway qualified. Italy also missed the qualification for the women's soccer tournament at the 2008 Olympic Games , in which only the three best teams from the 2007 World Cup were allowed to participate.

World Cup 2011 in Germany

The qualification for the second World Cup in Europe went a little better, but in the end it was also unsuccessful. In the group stage, Italy won the group ahead of Finland, Portugal, Slovenia and Armenia . The points were only shared 1: 1 in the home game against Finland. All other games were won. This time, however, the first place did not mean direct qualification for the World Cup. Instead, the eight group winners for the play-off round were divided into four seeded and four unseeded teams based on the results of the qualifying games for the 2009 European Championship and 2011 World Championship. Italy was one of the four worse teams and was drawn to a team from the top half. So they had to play against France. After a 0-0 win in France, they lost the second leg in Gubbio 2-3. France was thus qualified for the World Cup. The four losers now played for a place in the intercontinental playoffs against the third in the CONCACAF qualification. Italy first had to play against Ukraine. After a 3-0 win in Chernihiv , a 0-0 home game was enough for the next round. Here Switzerland was the opponent. This time Italy had to play at home first and won 1-0 in Treviso . The return leg in Aarau was won 4-2 after a goalless first half. With that Italy had reached the intercontinental playoffs, where they would probably face Mexico , the third best team in CONCACAF for years. However, Mexico surprisingly won a game against the USA for the first time in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2010 , which meant that the USA did not qualify directly. Instead, they were now opponents of the Italians, who twice lost 1-0 to them. Italy thus again missed the World Cup and the women's soccer tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games , in which, in addition to hosts Great Britain, only the two best teams from the 2011 World Cup were allowed to participate.

2015 World Cup in Canada

Four years later, the Netherlands was the last stumbling block on the way to the World Cup. After the team had qualified for the EM 2013 two years earlier and only failed there because of the defending champion and later European champion Germany, they were assigned to Pot 1 in the draw for qualifying for the World Cup in Canada . Lost the course were Spain , Romania , Czech Republic , Estonia and Macedonia . Italy won all games - except against Spain - and achieved the highest international win in their last game against Macedonia with a 15-0 win. In Spain they lost 2-0 and in the home game it was only enough to score 0-0. Since the Spaniards won all games against the other opponents, they qualified for the World Cup for the first time. This time one of the four best runners-up in the group was able to qualify for the World Cup via playoff games. Italy met Ukraine as the second-best group runner-up and won the first game 2-1. In the second leg in Ukraine they were 2-0 down until the 55th minute. Then Melania Gabbiadini succeeded first the connection goal and then record national player Patrizia Panico the 2-2 equalizer, which she became the sole record scorer of the Italians since this was her 108th international goal. In the playoff final, they met the Dutch women . In The Hague , Gabbiadini gave Italy a 1-1 lead, Vivianne Miedema , the best European goalscorer in the qualification, equalized. It was Miedema who sealed the end of the Italians with two goals in the second leg, Patrizia Panico's 200th international match. Italy did not manage to score themselves, could only shorten it with an own goal by the Dutch, but should have scored two more goals because of the away goals rule . The Dutch women qualified for the World Cup for the first time, Italy also missed the women's soccer tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games , in which only the three best teams from the 2015 World Cup were allowed to participate.

World Cup 2019 in France

Italy was able to qualify again for the third World Cup in Europe. They were able to eliminate Belgium, Moldova, Portugal and Romania in the qualification. After seven wins they qualified early and were then able to afford a defeat against Belgium in the eighth and final game.

In France, the Italians met Australia, Brazil and for the first time Jamaica , which was there for the first time. In the first game against Australia, goalkeeper Laura Giuliani was able to save a penalty from Sam Kerr in the 22nd minute, but was powerless against the margin. In the second half, after a defensive mistake by the Australians , Barbara Bonansea first scored the equalizer and then scored the winning goal in stoppage time. In the second game against the newcomer to the World Cup, Cristiana Girelli scored three goals in a 5-0 win. Against Brazil, the Italians were able to afford a 1-0 defeat in the last game to still be group winners. When they met China in the round of 16 . With goals from Valentina Giacinti and Aurora Galli , Italy secured their place in the quarter-finals, where they met European champions Netherlands and lost 2-0.
