The tournaments

World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China

Cameroon was unable to qualify for the first women's World Cup . At the 1991 African Football Championship for women , which served as qualification, Cameroon reached the final without a fight after Zaire and Zambia had withdrawn . In the final, the neighbor Nigeria was the opponent. On June 15, 1991, Cameroon played their first international match and first World Cup qualifying match and lost 2-0 in Lagos . Cameroon lost the second leg in Yaoundé 4-0. This made Nigeria the first African team to qualify for the women's World Cup. Cameroon did not play another game for seven years after that.

World Cup 1995 in Sweden

Four years later, Cameroon had registered a team for the African Championship , but withdrew. Nigeria again qualified as the only African team. As a result, Cameroon could not qualify for the first women's football tournament at the 1996 Olympic Games , as only the eight best teams from the World Cup could participate there.

World Cup 1999 in the USA

For the third world championship, for which the Africans received another starting place after increasing the field of participants to 16 teams, Cameroon had reported again. After the withdrawal of Sierra Leone , Cameroon qualified without a fight for the 1998 African Cup of Nations . In the championship, which is now being played in tournament form in Nigeria , Cameroon should initially play against Mozambique , which also withdrew. The games against the other group opponents South Africa and Ghana then ended 3: 2 and 1: 3, with Cameroon reaching the semi-finals as second in the group. Here the team met Nigeria again and lost 6-0. As a result, Cameroon could not qualify for the women's soccer tournament at the 2000 Olympic Games , as the seven best teams in the World Cup were only able to take part there alongside hosts Australia . The game for third place, which was insignificant for the World Cup qualification, was then lost to the Democratic Republic of the Congo after a 3-3-1-3 on penalties . In the final, Nigeria beat Ghana 2-0. Both finalists were qualified for the World Cup.

2003 World Cup in the USA

The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. Cameroon qualified with a 0-0 win and a 4-0 win against Gabon for the 2002 African Football Championship for women, which again served as a World Cup qualifier and which again took place in Nigeria . In the group stage, Cameroon met South Africa like four years before, but this time lost 2-1. In the second game followed a 0-0 win against Zimbabwe , but with a 1-0 win against Angola Cameroon finished second in the group. In the semifinals, Ghana lost 3-2 after extra time. The game for third place against South Africa, which was again insignificant for the World Cup qualification, was then won 3-0 by Cameroon. In the final, Nigeria was able to take revenge for its defeat in the preliminary round against Ghana and become African champions again 2-0. Ghana was also allowed to go to the World Cup again.

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . For the 2006 African Cup of Nations , which again served as a qualification and took place again in Nigeria - since Gabon withdrew as host, Cameroon qualified with two wins (4-0 and 5-0) against Kenya . The group stage started with a 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, followed by a 2-1 draw against Ghana, but Cameroon reached the semi-finals with a 2-0 win against Mali . Here again Nigeria was too big a hurdle and Cameroon lost with 0: 5. The game for 3rd place against South Africa, which was again insignificant for the World Cup qualification, ended 2-2 after extra time and was lost 4-5 on penalties. Nigeria won the final again against Ghana, but this time only 1-0. Both drove back to the World Cup.

World Cup 2011 in Germany

The Cameroonians again did not qualify for the World Cup in Germany . They qualified for the 2010 African Cup of Nations with two wins against the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2-0 and 3-0). At the finals, they drew 2-2 in their first game against defending champions Equatorial Guinea , followed by two 2-1 wins against Ghana and Algeria . In the semifinals they lost again to Nigeria, this time with 1: 5. The still insignificant game for 3rd place against South Africa was also lost - with 0: 2. In the final, Nigeria was able to take revenge for the semi-final defeat against Equatorial Guinea two years earlier and win back the title 4-2. By participating in the finals, Equatorial Guinea had also qualified for the World Cup for the first time.

2015 World Cup in Canada

Starting line-ups for the Cameroonians in their first World Cup game

After Cameroon qualified for the women's soccer tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games and prevailed over Nigeria, they also qualified for the first time . For the third World Cup in North America, the number of starting places was increased to 24 and the Africans were now given three places.

For the African Cup of Nations 2014 , Cameroon initially qualified with a 1-1 draw and a 1-0 win against Senegal . In the group stage, they first won 1-0 against South Africa, then a 2-0 win against Algeria, which meant that Cameroon had already qualified for the semi-finals. The final group game was lost to Ghana with 0: 1, but since South Africa won 5: 1 against Algeria, the victory was of no use to Ghana. In the semifinals, Cameroon then prevailed 2-1 after extra time against Ivory Coast , standing in the final against record champions Nigeria and thus qualified for the World Cup finals for the first time. The 2-0 defeat in the final could be coped with. In the game for third place, which was now also important for the World Cup qualification, the Ivory Coast surprisingly prevailed with a goal in the 85th minute against South Africa, which had also participated in the 2012 Olympic Games, and also qualified for the first Time for the World Cup.

When the groups were drawn, Cameroon was not seeded and was drawn to the group with defending champion Japan . Other opponents are the teams from Switzerland and Ecuador , who have also qualified for the first time . Before the World Cup, no team in this group had played against any of the other teams. Cameroon surprised one of the seven other WN newbies with a fast attacking game in the first game against Ecuador and won 6-0. Never before had a World Cup newcomer won their first game higher. In the second game against defending champions Japan, however, they revealed weaknesses in defense and quickly fell 2-0 down. After that, they were able to design the game openly and were even the better team in the second half, but could only score the next goal. They also fell behind against Switzerland and were dominated in the first half, so that only with a lot of luck they were only 1-0 down at half-time. In the second half they built on the performances of the two previous games, dominated the game and were able to turn it around with two goals. They were second in the group and the only African team in the knockout round. Here they met China for the first time and fell behind again early on. This time, however, the attack efforts were too impetuous that they were unsuccessful. With 0: 1 Cameroon was eliminated as a worthy representative of Africa and the best newcomer.

World Cup 2019 in France

The qualification for the third World Cup in Europe takes place for the African teams via the Africa Cup of Women 2018 , which took place in Ghana from November 17 to December 1, 2018 . The three best teams in the tournament can qualify. In qualifying for this championship, Cameroon only had to intervene in the second round and met the Republic of the Congo , which wanted to qualify for a World Cup for the first time and had prevailed in the first round with two wins against the Central African Republic. Cameroon won both games 5-0 and qualified for the African Championship. At the Africa Cup of Nations, Mali was defeated 2-1 in the first game. With a 3-0 win against Algeria and a 1-1 draw against host Ghana, who were eliminated as a result, the group won the semi-finals. After a goalless 120 minutes, the team lost to record champions Nigeria 2: 4 on penalties. In the game for third place, Cameroon met group opponents Mali again and won this game too, this time 4-2. The team thus secured the third African World Cup ticket.

In France, the team met Canada for the first time in their first game and lost 1-0 with a goal that was scored just before half-time. They also played against the Netherlands for the first time in the second group game. They kept the 0-0 up to the 41st minute. But they were able to compensate for the deficit two minutes later. In the second half they had to accept two more goals. Due to the results of the other groups, in the third group game New Zealand , against which they lost 3-1 at the 2012 Olympic Games, a win by one goal difference was enough to reach the round of 16. But New Zealand, which had never won a World Cup game, would have reached the knockout stage with a win. In the 57th minute, Ajara Nchout gave the Cameroonians the lead, in the 89th minute Aurella Awona deflected a shot into her own goal. Since a draw did not help both teams, both pushed for the winning goal. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Nchout also scored the decisive goal. In the round of 16, the Cameroonians met England for the first time as third-best in the group and lost 3-0 in a turbulent game with many video referee decisions.

The best Cameroonian World Cup goalscorers

Cameroon has played eight games so far, three of which have been won and five lost. Cameroon only played against the defending champions, but not yet against the hosts. The first six and the last games are the first so far against these teams and therefore initially the highest wins or losses against these countries. The win against Ecuador is also the highest of an African against a South American team. The biggest victory before was a 3-0 victory by the South African men against Paraguay in March 2008 (see: List of the highest international football results ).
