The tournaments
World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China
Chile also wanted to qualify for the first women's World Cup , in which the South Americans were given a starting place. Since only Brazil and Venezuela from South America were interested, there were only three games at the first South American Women's Championship , which served as qualification for the World Cup. Chile lost their first game, their first ever international match, against Brazil 6-1 and then won 1-0 against Venezuela. Since Brazil won 6-0 against Venezuela, the Brazilians became the first South American champions and went to the World Cup.
World Cup 1995 in Sweden
Four years later five teams had already applied, including Chile, which had only played one international match since the previous qualification. Again, the South American Championship also served as a qualification for the World Cup. Chile started with an 11-0 win against Bolivia , the Chilean women’s highest win over 22 years, but only managed to get another point in a 2-2 win against Ecuador . In between there was a 1: 6 against Brazil and in the end a 0: 1 against Argentina . Brazil won the group ahead of Argentina, but then had to face Argentina again in the final, won it 2-0 and went to the World Cup as South America's representative.
World Cup 1999 in the USA
All 10 CONMEBOL members had registered for the third world championship and the South American champions, who are again serving as qualifications , so that the game was played in two groups. Chile had not played a game since the last South American Championship and won their first game against Venezuela, but then lost to Peru , Colombia and Brazil. This meant that only the fourth place in the group was occupied, which was not enough to move into the semi-finals. Brazil ultimately prevailed again and represented South America at the World Cup, while Argentina failed in the Inter-American Playoffs to Mexico , so that again only one South American team took part.
2003 World Cup in the USA
The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. But South America now had two permanent starting positions, so that the chances of a successful qualification had increased somewhat. In the qualification , which was played again as Sudamericano Femenino in 2003 , Chile, which this time had not played any international matches in the five-year break between the championships, first had to play in a tournament in Lima against Bolivia and Peru. Chile lost both games, so the championship was over after two games for the Chileans. South America was then represented in the USA by Brazil and Argentina.
World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China
Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . In the Sudamericano Femenino 2006 , which again served as a qualification , the 10 CONMEBOL members initially played four teams in two groups of five for the final round. Chile had only played two games against Argentina that were not counted by FIFA after the last championship and lost both 6-0. Opponents were initially Ecuador , Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay . With only one win against Colombia, but three defeats, only the last place was occupied, while Argentina and Brazil went back to the World Cup, where Brazil were the first South American team to reach the final but lost to defending champions Germany, Argentina 11-0 in the opening game had defeated.
World Cup 2011 in Germany
For the World Cup in Germany, the Chileans could not qualify again. This time they had used the break between the championships and played several international matches, even for the first time against teams from other confederations, and so they started well in the Sudamericano Femenino 2010 . With three wins in the preliminary round Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru were relegated to the places and reached the final round. In this it was only enough to draw two against Argentina and Colombia. Due to a defeat in the last game against Brazil, which won all the games in the final round, they then had to give way to Colombia, which surprisingly prevailed against Argentina and was able to go to the World Cup for the first time, but did not survive the preliminary round, while Brazil remained undefeated. in the round of 16 but failed on penalties to the USA .
2015 World Cup in Canada
For the World Cup in the north of the subcontinent, the number of participants was increased to 24 and South America got the opportunity to qualify for the third place in the South American Championship against the fourth place in the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2014 in the domestic American playoffs . In qualifying , the Chileans won the first two games of the preliminary round against Argentina and Bolivia, but then lost to Brazil and Paraguay. They only finished fourth and were eliminated. Ultimately, Brazil and Colombia qualified again directly and Ecuador in the domestic American playoffs against Trinidad & Tobago . At the finals, Ecuador was eliminated in the preliminary round, the other two South American teams in the round of 16.
World Cup 2019 in France
In the qualification , the Chileans and the Brazilians prevail in the Sudamericano Femenino 2018 . They used the home advantage to initially reach the final round with two wins against Peru and Uruguay and two draws against Colombia and Paraguay, in which they initially lost against Brazil and drew against Colombia, but with a 4-0 win against Argentina they still played second place and thus the World Cup ticket.
At the World Cup, they met Sweden for the first time in their first game . The Chileans kept the 0-0 for 83 minutes, but then conceded two more goals. In the second group game against defending champions USA they were 3-0 down after the first half, goalkeeper Christiane Endler prevented further goals in the second half and was honored as player of the game. Due to the results of the other groups, in the third group game against Thailand , which the Chileans met for the first time, a victory with three goals difference was enough to reach the round of 16. It took 48 minutes to score the first goal, with the Thai goalkeeper helping. In the 80th minute, María Urrutia was able to distinguish herself as the first Chilean World Cup scorer. Six minutes later, Francisca Lara had the chance to increase it to 3-0 with a penalty, but only hit the crossbar. Despite further attacks, no further goal was achieved and Chile was eliminated as the second worst group third, as African champions Nigeria had conceded one less goal.
