The tournaments

World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China

Switzerland failed to qualify for the 1991 European Women's Football Championship , which served as a qualification for the first women's World Cup in the People's Republic of China . The Swiss met Denmark , Italy and Spain . Only in and against Spain could points be scored with a 0-0 and a 2-1 victory. The Swiss were eliminated as third. Denmark and Italy qualified for the World Cup.

World Cup 1995 in Sweden

Four years later, Switzerland failed to qualify for the 1995 European Championship . This time defending champions Germany and Croatia were stronger. Only against the third group opponent Wales both games were won (3: 2 and 4: 2). In addition, a point was taken in the 1-1 draw in Croatia. Germany won with six games and scored 55-0 goals - a record that is still valid today. The 0:11 against Germany in the last game is the Swiss women’s biggest defeat to date.

World Cup 1999 in the USA

For the third World Cup, UEFA scheduled qualifying matches for the first time . To date, UEFA is the only continental association that holds separate World Cup qualifiers. Switzerland met Italy, Finland and France and lost all games. Group winners Italy qualified directly for the World Cup, Finland failed in the playoffs of the group runners-up to Russia .

2003 World Cup in the USA

The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. For Switzerland, the qualification was only slightly better. At least the Finns, who were four years before them, could be left behind. Behind the tied Swedes , however, only 3rd place, tied with Finland, was taken. Group winners Sweden qualified directly, Denmark failed in the playoffs of the group runners-up to France, which then qualified for the first time after further games against England .

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . In qualifying, Switzerland met world champions Germany, Russia, Scotland and Ireland . Only in the home games against Ireland and Scotland could they get 2-0 and 1-1 points respectively. This made Switzerland last in the group. World champions Germany prevailed with eight wins in eight games and drove to the World Cup to defend the title, which was also successful.

World Cup 2011 in Germany

The qualification for the World Cup in the neighboring country went much better. In the group stage, first place was taken ahead of Russia, Ireland, Israel and Kazakhstan . Seven games were won and only one - the home game against Russia - lost. The first place this time did not mean direct qualification for the World Cup. Rather, the eight group winners for the play-off round were divided into four seeded and four unseeded teams based on the results of the qualifying games for the 2009 European Championship and 2011 World Championship. Due to the previous poor results, Switzerland had the smallest coefficient. For the first round, Switzerland was drawn against England , but lost both games (0-2 and 2-3), which meant that England qualified for the World Cup. The four losers then played a place in the intercontinental playoffs against the USA in two more rounds . Switzerland prevailed in the second round with a 3-1 win in Denmark and a goalless draw at home and met the Italians in the third round. Both games were lost: 0: 1 in Italy and 2: 4 in Aarau . Italy then lost both games against the USA 1-0 and did not qualify for the World Cup.

2015 World Cup in Canada

Martina Voss-Tecklenburg led the Swiss women to participate in the World Cup for the first time

Four years later, Switzerland finally and impressively qualified for the World Cup. Before qualifying for the EM 2013 , the 125-time German national player Martina Voss-Tecklenburg was signed as national coach . As a trainer, she led FCR 2001 Duisburg to victory in the UEFA Women's Cup in 2009 . Although the qualification failed again, five out of ten games were won. When the qualification for the World Cup in Canada was drawn , the Swiss women were already assigned to Pot 3 and were drawn to the group with the more highly rated Danes and Icelanders who had reached the quarter-finals at the 2013 European Championship two years earlier . The Danes were only eliminated in the semi-finals of the European Championship. Switzerland started the qualification with wins against Serbia (9: 0), in Iceland (2: 0), in Denmark (1: 0), in Israel (5: 0) and achieved their highest international win in the 11: 0 against Malta . Then followed with a 1-1 in the home game against Denmark the only point loss. The remaining games were won and when Denmark and Iceland drew 1: 1 on June 15, 2014, Switzerland was the first European team and the only one from Pot 3 to qualify for the finals for the first time.

Starting line-ups in the Swiss women’s first World Cup game

Despite the impressive qualification, Switzerland was not seeded when the groups were drawn and was drawn into the group with defending champion Japan , against whom the Swiss have to play in their first World Cup match. Other opponents are the teams from Cameroon and Ecuador , who also qualified for the first time and were the last to qualify for the World Cup. Switzerland had not previously played against any of these teams.

In the first game against defending champions Japan they lost 1-0 to a penalty, but were the better team, especially in the second half. Against Ecuador, the second newcomer in this group, they initially needed the help of an Ecuadorian despite a multitude of chances, but were then more unerring in the second half and achieved the highest victory of a World Cup newcomer and the third highest of the women's World Cup with a 10: 1 History. Against the third newcomer in the group, they dominated the game in the first half, but scored only one goal. In the second half, Cameroon got stronger and turned the game around. As the third-best group third, the Swiss qualified for the round of 16. Here they were also the determining team against hosts Canada, but failed again and again due to the Canadian defense and their goalkeeper. They even only allowed a Canadian combination, which then promptly meant the 0: 1. Thus, Switzerland was eliminated as the penultimate newcomer and had also missed direct qualification for the women's football tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games , but still had the chance to receive the third European Olympic ticket in barracks games against the three other European round of 16 losers. This chance was finally squandered in those playoffs when they finished third behind Sweden and the Netherlands.

World Cup 2019 in France

When the qualifying groups were drawn, the Swiss, who first took part in a European Championship finals in 2017, were allocated to Pot A and were considered the favorites of their group, in which they were the only team with World Cup experience. Opponents were Scotland, against which the Swiss had not yet won (4 draws and 5 defeats), Poland (previously 3 wins) and for the first time Albania and Belarus. The Swiss then started with two wins against Albania as well as wins against Poland and Belarus and then won against the Scottish women 1-0 for the first time. Then it became known that national coach Voss-Tecklenburg would give up her position after qualifying and take over the post of German national coach. Unimpressed by this, the Swiss won 5-0 in Belarus before the summer break in June 2018, but then lost 2-1 after the summer break in Scotland. Nevertheless, the direct comparison due to the away goals rule against the Scottish women and the better goal difference still spoke for Switzerland, provided they won the last game in Poland. There they only came to a goalless draw, while the Scottish women won in Albania and thus qualified for the first time for the World Cup finals and as the only European newcomer. As the second-best runners-up in the group, the Swiss women qualified for the playoffs of the best runners-up in the group. Here they first met Belgium in the semi-finals, which, like Switzerland, had taken part in a European Championship finals for the first time in 2017, but has never qualified for a World Cup. With a 2: 2 in Belgium and a 1: 1 at home, Switzerland qualified for the playoff final by the away goals rule. Here they met the Dutch women who, like Switzerland, had made their first World Cup finals four years earlier and had won the European Championship in 2017. In the first leg, Switzerland lost 3-0 in Utrecht after a goalless first half. In the second leg, they were outnumbered in the seventh minute after a red card for Dutch captain Anouk Dekker , but could not take advantage of them and after Vivianne Miedema had put the Dutch women in the 52nd lead with her seventh qualifying goal, the Swiss women needed five goals for a successful qualification. But they only managed one goal and so the Dutch qualified for the second time for a World Cup finals. Due to the non-qualification, Switzerland dropped one place in the all-time table to 23rd place.

Games

Switzerland has played four games so far, one of which has been won and three lost. Switzerland is the second newcomer (after Russia in 1999) to play their first game against the defending champions. They also met the hosts in their last game. The only victory so far is also the highest against this team.
