The article contains a detailed account of the South Korean national soccer team for women at world championships . So far, South Korea has only qualified for three women's World Cup finals and is taking part for the third time in 2019. In the all-time table , South Korea finished next to last as the worst team with only one participation before the 2015 World Cup. With their first win in a World Cup game, which was the first time the knockout round was reached, South Korea improved to 20th place.

World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China

South Korea eliminated in the Asian Cup 1991 , which served as a qualifier for the first World Cup, made in the preliminary round. All games against the People's Republic of China , the Republic of China and Thailand were lost. The People's Republic of China, the Republic of China and Japan qualified as representatives of Asia for the World Cup.

World Cup 1995 in Sweden

Even four years later, South Korea could not qualify. For the first World Cup in Europe, the Asian teams were only granted two starting places. At the Asian Games in Hiroshima in 1994 , which served as qualification for the second World Cup, Japan, the Republic of China, the People's Republic of China and South Korea first met in a group of four. After a 0: 5 against Japan and a 0: 2 against the People's Republic of China, South Korea had no chance to qualify before the last game, as both had also won against the Republic of China and were thus qualified for the World Cup. The last meaningless game, South Korea lost 2-0 to the Republic of China.

This also meant that the qualification for the first women's soccer tournament at the 1996 Olympic Games was missed, in which only the eight best teams from the World Cup could take part.

World Cup 1999 in the USA

South Korea could not qualify for the third world championship either. After increasing the field of participants to 16 teams, three starting places were available for the Asian teams again. At the 1997 Asian women's football championship , which this time served as a qualifying tournament, South Korea had to compete in a group of three, from which only the group winners qualified for the semi-finals. After a 0-1 win against the Republic of China, they defeated Kazakhstan 11-0 , but since the Republic of China also beat the Kazakhs, South Korea only finished second and was eliminated. The Republic of China then failed first in the semifinals against the People's Republic of China and then in the game for third place to Japan, who qualified for the World Cup together with North Korea . For South Korea, this also meant that it could not participate in the women's soccer tournament at the 2000 Olympics .

2003 World Cup in the USA

The World Cup should actually take place in the People's Republic of China again . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. In addition to the three direct starting positions, a fourth Asian team now had the chance to qualify in the AFC / CONCACAF playoffs. South Korea didn't have to take this detour, because for the first time the team was able to qualify directly. At the Asian Cup in 2003 , the South Koreans survived the preliminary round with wins against Hong Kong (8: 0), Thailand (6: 0) and Singapore (4: 0) as well as a 2: 2 against North Korea in second place behind the tied North Koreans. In the semifinals they lost 3-1 to the People's Republic of China, but were able to win the game for 3rd place against Japan 1-0. Japan was able to prevail against Mexico in the playoffs , so that four Asian teams could take part in the World Cup.

In the USA, the South Koreans met South American champions Brazil in their first World Cup game on September 21, 2003 in Washington, DC and lost 3-0. This was followed by a 0-1 win against France and a 7-1 win against former world champions Norway . These meetings allowed Kim Jin-hee so far the only World Cup goal for South Korea. As the bottom of the group, South Korea said goodbye to the World Cup for 12 years.

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later it was a little more difficult to qualify, because Australia - especially to offer the men's national team better chances of qualifying for the World Cup - had switched to the Asian association. At the 2006 Asian Cup in Australia , South Korea lost the opening game of the group stage against hosts Australia 4-0. After that, there were two wins against Thailand (11: 0) and Myanmar (3: 1) whereby South Korea had scored the most goals overall, but the last decisive game against North Korea was lost 0: 1. Thus, South Korea retired as third party.

World Cup 2011 in Germany

South Korea was also unable to qualify for the World Cup in Germany. At the 2010 Asian Cup in China, a goalless draw was achieved in the first game against the hosts, but the second game against the eventual Asian champions Australia was lost 2-1. The 5-0 win against Vietnam was only enough for third place. In addition to Australia, Japan and North Korea qualified, China only came fourth. The fourth-placed Asian team had no opportunity this time to qualify via intercontinental playoffs. This was the first time that a women's World Cup took place without the People's Republic of China.

2015 World Cup in Canada

Four years later, South Korea was able to qualify again and also benefited from the fact that the Asian teams were now given five starting places due to the increase in the field of participants. In addition, North Korea was excluded from participation in the 2011 World Cup because of doping offenses. In the qualification , for which the Asian Cup served again , South Korea prevailed in the group stage with two wins against Myanmar (12-0) and Thailand (4-0) as well as a goalless draw against China as group winners due to the more goals scored. South Korea was thus in the semi-finals and had qualified for the World Cup. The semi-finals and the game for third place were then lost to Australia and China respectively 1: 2. Asian champions became world champions Japan for the first time. Thailand was the fifth Asian team to qualify for the first time.

When the groups were drawn, the South Koreans were not seeded and were drawn to group E with South American champions Brazil . Other opponents were the newcomers to the World Cup, Costa Rica and Spain. The South Koreans were trained at the World Cup by Yoon Deuk-yeo , who took part as a player in the World Cup in Italy in 1990 , but only attracted attention there because he received the red card in the last group game .

South Korea was able to win a game for the first time and made it to the round of 16, but had no chance there against World Cup favorites France.

World Cup 2019 in France

For the third World Cup in Europe, South Korea qualified at the 2018 Asian Women's Football Championship . The team first had to qualify for this at a tournament in North Korea in April 2017. The team prevailed against the hosts due to the more goals scored and thus better goal difference. Both of them separated 1-1 at the first meeting of the two Korean teams in North Korea. At the Asian Cup in Jordan in April 2018 , the South Koreans had to compete in the heavier group against defending champions Japan, whose predecessors Australia and Vietnam. The three "heavyweights" each drew and won against Vietnam. But since Australia and Japan separated 1: 1 and South Korea played against both 0: 0, Japan and Australia had won the direct comparison with the one more goal scored and were directly qualified for both the semi-finals and the World Cup. South Korea had to play against the Philippines and secured their fifth Asian World Cup ticket with a 5-0 win.

In France, the South Koreans met the hosts in the opening game and lost 4-0. The Asians also lost against Norway and in the first game against Nigeria and were eliminated as the bottom of the group.

Games

South Korea have played ten World Cup games so far, of which the first four and the last four were lost, the fifth ended in a draw and the sixth brought their only victory to date. South Korea took part in the opening game of the World Cup in 2019 and played against the hosts, but never against the eventual world champions and defending champions. The most frequent opponents are France (3 games) and Brazil, against which the first group game took place in the first two appearances, and Norway, against which the highest and last defeat were conceded, with two games each. All other games are unique.

Most of the games (7) were played by Kim Jeong-mi , who played three games in 2003 as an 18-year-old and at the time the second youngest player on the team and was the only South Korean to play again in 2015, as well as Cho Soh-yun , who played in all games in 2015 and 2019 was used.
