The tournaments
World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China
For the first women's World Cup, the Danish women qualified third in the 1991 European Championship . For this they had initially prevailed in the European Championship qualification with five wins and one draw against Italy , Switzerland and Spain . In the quarter-finals against the Netherlands they only achieved a 0-0 home game. Due to the 1-0 in the second leg after extra time for the EM finals and thus qualified for the World Cup. At the EM they then lost in the semifinals against Norway after a goalless game on penalties , but then won the game for third place against Italy.
In the People's Republic of China , Denmark was drawn into the group with hosts and Asian champions China , Oceania champions New Zealand and European runner-up Norway . On November 17, 1991, they played their first World Cup game in Guangzhou and won 3-0 against New Zealand. Helle Jensen scored the first two World Cup goals for the Danes. The second game was followed by a 2-2 win against the hosts. With a 1: 2 against Norway in the last group match, Denmark finished third in the group, but qualified as the best third in the group for the quarter-finals. Here the Danes met European champions Germany and lost 2-1 after extra time. Germany then lost first in the semifinals against eventual world champions USA and then also the game for third place against the Swedes.
World Cup 1995 in Sweden
Four years later, the Danish women were able to qualify again. In qualifying for the European Championship in 1995 , which again served as World Cup qualification, they prevailed with four victories against Bulgaria and Lithuania . In the EM quarter-finals against Sweden they won the home game 2-0, but after a 3-0 away defeat they were eliminated. As the best quarter-final loser, they were still qualified for the World Cup.
At the World Cup she was drawn into a group with Australia , defending champions USA and, as four years earlier, China. After a 5-0 opener win against Australia, they lost 2-0 to the USA and 3-1 to China. As the best third in the group, they reached the quarter-finals like four years earlier, but lost 3-1 to eventual world champions Norway. By moving into the quarter-finals, Denmark had qualified for the first women's football tournament at the 1996 Olympic Games in which only the eight best teams from the World Cup could take part.
World Cup 1999 in the USA
For the third World Cup, UEFA scheduled separate qualifying matches for the first time and to date the only continental association. In qualifying Denmark met Russia , Portugal and Belgium . With six wins in six games, Denmark took first place six points ahead of Russia and qualified directly for the World Cup. Russia then prevailed in the group runners-up playoffs against Finland and qualified as well.
In the USA, the Danes lost the opening game against hosts USA 3-0. After a 1: 3 against World Cup newcomer North Korea and a 0: 2 against African champions Nigeria , Denmark adopted as a group last eight years by the World Cup stage and was therefore not for the football tournament of the women in the 2000 Olympic Games qualified on the in addition to hosts Australia, only the seven best teams in the World Cup were able to participate.
2003 World Cup in the USA
The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. In qualifying Denmark met Sweden , Switzerland and Finland . With five wins and one defeat, Denmark was only second in the group behind the tied Swedes due to the worse goal difference and had to make the playoffs of the group runners-up. There they lost 2-0 in France , so the 1-1 draw at home was not enough to qualify for the World Cup.
World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China
Four years later the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time . In the qualification , Denmark met Finland again as well as Spain, Poland and Belgium. With six wins, one defeat and one draw, the Danes prevailed. However, the qualification was only secured in the last game by a 1-0 home win against the Finns, who had tied the points until then, which meant that the Danes had three points more than the Finns.
In the final round they met host China again and lost 3-2 at the beginning. The winning goal for the Chinese only fell in the 88th minute, one minute after Denmark equalized to 2-2. In the second game, New Zealand was defeated 2-0, but lost 0-1 in the last game against Brazil . Denmark was only third and since the group third had not reached the quarter-finals since the increase in 1999 to 16 participants, Denmark dropped out and said goodbye to the World Cup for at least 12 years. With the preliminary round Denmark also missed the direct qualification for the women's football tournament at the 2008 Olympic Games , in which only the three best European teams from the World Cup could participate. Since England, the third best European team, was not allowed to start, Sweden and Denmark were allowed to play for this place. Sweden prevailed 4: 2 and 3: 1, so that Denmark could not take part in the Olympic Games.
World Cup 2011 in Germany
The Danes could not qualify for the World Cup in neighboring Germany . In the group stage six wins and two draws with a total of 45-0 goals against Scotland , Greece , Bulgaria and Georgia . The Danes also achieved their highest international win with a 15-0 win against Georgia. They did not qualify for the group winners' play-offs until their last game, a goalless draw in Vejle against Scotland, which was one point less. Opponent in the playoffs was Sweden. After a 1: 2 in the away game they were already leading 2: 0 in the home game, but then had to accept the next goal, so that after 90 minutes it was 1: 2. In the following extra time, Charlotte Rohlin , who had already scored the 1: 2 connection goal, secured the World Cup ticket for the Swedes with the goal to 2: 2 and Denmark was only a spectator.
2015 World Cup in Canada
Denmark was also unable to qualify for the third World Cup in North America. Denmark was the group favorite after the qualification draw . The opponents were for the first time in Israel , Malta and Serbia , as well as Iceland and Switzerland, teams that were placed below Denmark in the FIFA world rankings . In the first game in Serbia it was only enough to score 1: 1 and then a 0: 1 home defeat against Switzerland followed. A 5-0 win against Malta then followed, but with a 1-1 draw in Switzerland, the World Cup ticket seemed a long way off. With the 1-1 draw between Denmark and Iceland on June 15, 2014, Switzerland was the first European team and for the first time ever to qualify for the finals. With a 0: 1 home defeat against Israel on the last day of the game, they missed second place, which was not enough for the playoffs of the group runners-up with the few points scored before the game.
World Cup 2019 in France
The Danes could not qualify for the third World Cup in Europe either. After finishing second at the 2017 European Championships , they started qualifying 6-1 in Hungary, but then did not play for the second game against Sweden due to differences of opinion with the association. The UEFA finally scored the game 3-0 for Sweden. With four wins and one defeat for the Swedes in Ukraine, they still had a good chance of becoming group winners. Then they only played a draw in the penultimate game against Croatia and then lost the last game against Sweden in Viborg at home . It was only enough for second place. As the fourth-best runners-up in the group, the Danes qualified for the playoffs of the four best runners-up in the group, benefiting from the fact that the Icelanders only scored 1-1 against the Czech Republic in their last group game and thus had one point less than the Danes.
In the playoffs they met European champions Netherlands, against whom they had lost the European Championship final with 2-4. In the first game in Breda , the Dutch won 2-0. In the second leg, Nadia Nadim brought her team into the lead in the 5th minute with a converted penalty. Just two minutes later, however, they had to accept the equalizer and then lost this game with a goal in stoppage time, so that they could not qualify for the second round of the playoffs. Due to the non-qualification, they fell one place in the all-time table.
