The article provides a detailed account of the New Zealand women's national soccer team at World Cups . The New Zealand team has qualified five times for the finals and was the first oceanic participant in 1991. After that Australia qualified three times as an oceanic participant, but after Australia joined the Asian association, New Zealand was always able to qualify due to the low competition in Oceania. New Zealand was in 25th place in the all-time table before the 2019 World Cup. Since no World Cup game could be won in 2019, but a newcomer (Chile) and Spain succeeded, New Zealand slipped to 27th place and is the worst team at more than three participations.

The tournaments

World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China

The New Zealanders qualified for the first World Cup for women in the People's Republic of China . In the 1991 Oceania Women's Soccer Championship , which served as qualification, first place was placed ahead of Australia and Papua New Guinea . New Zealand and Australia were tied, but New Zealand had scored more goals against Papua New Guinea. They both won 1-0 against each other once. New Zealand went to the World Cup as Oceania champions, Australia had to watch.

In China, New Zealand was drawn to the group with the hosts. Other opponents were Denmark , against which the first World Cup game was played in Guangzhou on November 17, 1991 and lost 3-0, and Norway , which lost 4-0 in the second game. Kim Nye then scored the first World Cup goal for New Zealand at 1: 4 against hosts China . As the bottom of the group, New Zealand was eliminated without winning a point.

World Cup 1995 in Sweden

Four years later, Australia turned the tables. In the 1994 Women's Oceania Cup , they scored more goals against Papua New Guinea, while Australia and New Zealand played 1-0 and 1-2 against each other. So New Zealand had to watch this time and missed the qualification for the first women's football tournament at the 1996 Olympic Games , as only the eight best teams from the World Cup could qualify for it.

World Cup 1999 in the USA

Six oceanic teams had already applied for the third world championship, so that in the 1998 Oceania women's football championship , which served as qualification, two groups of three were played against each other. The New Zealanders achieved the highest win in their international history with 21-0 in their first game against Samoa . In the second game, Fiji was beaten 14-0 and reached the semi-finals. 2003 World Cup in the USA

The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. Since only five teams from Oceania had registered for the 2003 Oceania Women's Soccer Championship, the championship was played in a group in an everyone-versus-everyone mode. New Zealand won the first three games against Samoa (14-0), the Cook Islands (9-0) and Papua New Guinea (5-0) and met Australia in the last game, which had also won three times against the other three. New Zealand lost 2-0 to Australia and again did not go to the USA for the World Cup.

World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China

Four years later, the World Cup took place in the People's Republic of China for the second time , which meant that China did not have to qualify. Australia had switched to the Asian federation - especially to offer the men's national team better chances of qualifying for a World Cup. From then on, New Zealand no longer had any serious opponents in the women's Oceania Cup . At the 2007 Women's Oceania Cup , they easily qualified with three wins against Tonga (6: 1), Samoa (8: 0) and Papua New Guinea (7: 0), although in principle it was all about which New Zealander Was the top scorer. 2015 World Cup in Canada

In the qualification for the World Cup in Canada, for which the oceanic teams were still only allowed one starting place even after the increase in the field of participants, New Zealand prevailed again as the winner of the 2014 Oceania Women's Soccer Championship . Since only four teams took part, only three games had to be played. All could be won without conceding a goal: 16-0 against Tonga, 3-0 against Papua New Guinea and 11-0 against the Cook Islands. When the groups were drawn, New Zealand was not seeded and was drawn to group A with hosts Canada . The Canadians have now been trained by the former New Zealander coach, John Herdman . World Cup 2019 in France

In the qualification for the third World Cup in Europe, for which the oceanic teams were still only granted one starting place, New Zealand played for the oceanic championship title from mid-November to early December 2018 , which entitles them to participate in the World Cup. At the World Cup, the New Zealanders met Canada and the Netherlands, as they did four years earlier, and for the first time in a World Cup game against Cameroon . After losing to Canada and the Netherlands, New Zealand and Cameroon still had the chance to reach the round of 16 with a win in their last game. Ajara Nchout scored the first goal for the Africans in the 57th minute . In the 80th minute, Aurella Awona steered a shot into her own goal. Since a draw was of no use to both teams, they tried to score the winning goal. In the fifth minute, Nchout was able to open the door to the round of 16 for Cameroon with her second goal. World Cup 2023 in Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand had applied for the World Cup and were the only remaining applicants next to Colombia until the award decision was made. a.
