The tournaments
World Cup 1991 in the People's Republic of China
The Scottish women did not participate in the qualification for the 1991 European Women's Football Championship , which served as a qualification for the first World Cup for women in the People's Republic of China . Therefore, they couldn't qualify.
World Cup 1995 in Sweden
Four years later, they missed qualifying for the European Championship in 1995 in the group stage. Here were Italy , France and Portugal , the group opponents. The Scottish women lost the six games and were last in the group. Group winners Italy failed in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Norway and also failed to qualify for the World Cup. The Scottish women had to compete in the subsequent qualification for the European Championship 1997 in the B category in order to get a starting place in the A category for the next World Cup qualification, but this failed.
World Cup 1999 in the USA
For the third World Cup, UEFA scheduled qualifying matches for the first time . To date, UEFA is the only continental association that holds separate World Cup qualifiers. Since the Scottish women did not manage to reach the A category, from which it was only possible to qualify for the World Cup, they had to start again in the B category. The opponents here were the Czech Republic , Estonia and Lithuania . There were two draws against the Czechs, both of which ended 1: 1, all games were won against the other two teams, with Lithuania achieving their highest victory so far with 17: 0. They were tied with the Czechs and had the same goal difference, but they scored one more goal and were group winners. As this they met Spain, one of the bottom of the group in the A category and lost both games (0: 3 and 1: 4), which means they missed promotion to the A category. So they had to compete in the qualification for the EM 2001 again in the B category, where they again met the Czech Republic, Ireland and Croatia . Since they lost in Croatia and the Czech Republic, the four wins in the other games only reached second place behind the Czech Republic, which meant that they had no chance of moving up to the A category.
2003 World Cup in the USA
The 2003 World Cup should actually take place again in the People's Republic of China . Because of the SARS epidemic, the tournament was moved to the USA at short notice. This was the second time that the World Cup took place in the USA. The Scottish women only had the opportunity to qualify in the B category for the A category. Opponents were Belgium , Austria and Wales . The Scottish women only lost the game in Belgium and won the other five games. The Belgians also won five games, but in the end they had the worst goal difference, so that Scotland were group winners. However, both managed to move up to the A category - there were no playoff games against the bottom of the group in the A category this time. In addition, they had the opportunity to qualify for the EM 2005 , but failed there because of defending champions Germany and the Czech Republic.
World Cup 2007 in the People's Republic of China
World champions Germany, Russia , Ireland and Switzerland were then four years later the opponents in the qualification for the next World Cup, which then took place for the second time in the People's Republic of China . The Scottish women started with a 0: 6 in Russia, a goalless draw in their home game against Ireland, a 0: 4 in Germany and then won a direct World Cup qualifier for the first time with a 1: 0 against Switzerland. Ten days later, they won 2-0 in Ireland. After that, however, a point could only be won at 1-1 in Switzerland. In third place in the group, the Scottish women therefore missed the World Cup.
World Cup 2011 in Germany
For the qualification they were drawn into a group with Denmark , Greece , Bulgaria and Georgia . The Scottish women won the first five games, but then lost the home game against Denmark 0-1. After a 4-1 win against Greece, they could have reached the group winners' playoffs with a win in their last game in Denmark. But they only got a goalless draw and finished second behind Denmark. Due to the draw, however, Denmark was not set for the playoffs and was initially unable to prevail against Sweden and then failed in the playoffs for a place in the playoffs against the CONCACAF fourth at Switzerland, which in turn failed to Italy, that ultimately was subject to the USA.
2015 World Cup in Canada
Four years later, the Scottish women could not qualify again. Opponents in the group stage this time were Sweden, Poland , Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland and the Faroe Islands. The Scottish women only lost both games against Sweden, which qualified directly for the World Cup without losing points, but won all other games and were thus qualified as one of the four best runners-up in the group for the playoffs. Here they met the Dutch women, but lost both games. The Dutch women were able to qualify for the World Cup for the first time after a 1-1 home game with a 2-1 win in Italy .
World Cup 2019 in France
Two years later, the Scottish women took part in a European Championship finals for the first time, after which the long-time Swedish trainer Anna Signeul left the Scottish women, who had ensured the continuous promotion, and became national coach in Finland. Shelley Kerr was his successor and under her the qualification for a World Cup finals succeeded for the first time. In qualifying , the Scottish women were able to prevail against Switzerland, which had reached the World Cup finals for the first time in 2015. Other opponents were Poland, Albania and Belarus . After a 1-0 defeat in Switzerland, the first ever against Switzerland, it didn't look like it for a long time, as the Swiss - like the Scottish women - initially won all of their other games. On the penultimate matchday, however, the Scottish women defeated Switzerland 2-1 and then benefited from the fact that Switzerland only managed a goalless draw in Poland on the last matchday, while the Scottish women won 2-1 in Albania. This means that the Scottish women are the only European newcomers to qualify for the World Cup finals.
As in their first European Championship participation in 2017, the Scottish women met England in their first World Cup game and lost 2-1. In the second game they met Japan and lost again with 1: 2. In the last group game they met Argentina for the first time . With a win they still had a chance to reach the round of 16. At first it looked like that, because the Scottish women led 3-0 up to the 74th minute. Then the South Americans scored the 1: 3 goal. Five minutes later, goalkeeper Lee Alexander steered a long-range shot into her own goal. Alexander was then tragic heroine in stoppage time. She initially held a penalty shot based on video evidence, but after another video evidence, the penalty kick was repeated because she had not had one foot on the goal line when it was taken. In the repetition, she could not parry the penalty kick, so the game ended 3: 3. The Scottish women had their first World Cup point, but missed the last sixteen as the bottom of the group.
