Anna Signeul (born May 20, 1961 in Falun ) is a former Swedish soccer player and current coach. Signeul has been the coach of the Finnish women's national soccer team since 2017 .
Career
Player
Signeul started her career at the age of 11 with Falu BS in her hometown. When she was 18, she moved to Sundborn GoIF and played there for two years. Engagements at IK Brage and Strömsbro IF followed . In total, she came to 240 games in the Damallsvenskan .
trainer
During her time as a player, she trained the teams she played for. After the end of her active time, she initially continued to train Strömsbro IF and then Tyresö FF , but was also responsible for the Swedish U-16 and U-18 teams. With the U-18 team, she reached the semi-finals at the first U-18 European Women's Football Championship in 1998 . Here they met France on both legs and as they both won their home games 2-0, the penalty shoot-out , in which the French scored better , had to decide. The Swedes did better a year later and used their home advantage at the U-18 European Women's Football Championship in 1999 . In front of the tied German team , they became European champions due to a direct comparison. In the following years, third place could only be achieved once, in 2000.
In spring 2005, she became the successor of Vera Pauw as the coach of the Scottish national football team . The first game under their leadership was a game behind closed doors against England , which the Scottish women won 2-1. Two days later they lost with the same result against the English women. Since then, she has looked after the Scottish in over 140 games .
In February 2015, she extended her contract for two years.
Signeul was able to lead the Scottish women, who were 29th in the FIFA world rankings when they started working, to 20th in June 2013. So far, however, the Scottish women have not qualified for a major tournament under their leadership. In qualifying for the Euro 2009 they failed in the playoffs to Russia , in qualifying for Euro 2013 in the playoffs with a last-minute goal to Spain and in qualifying for the 2015 World Cup in the first round of the playoffs Dutch women . It went better in qualifying for the 2017 European Championship : With seven wins and only one home defeat to group winners Iceland, the Scottish team qualified as the best runner-up in the group for the first time for a finals at a major football tournament and with Jane Ross , the ten and thus a third of the Scottish goals scored, one of the top three scorers.
After the end of the European Championship in 2017, Signeul switched to the coaching position of the Finnish national team . In qualifying for the 2019 World Cup , the Finns only took third place, whereas the Scottish women she had previously trained were able to qualify for the first time.
