preparation

After the successful qualification, the Swiss played twice against the world champions in the USA in October and lost with 0: 4 and 1: 5. The Swiss started the European Championship year with a training camp in Spain from January 16 to 21 with an unofficial game against Spain on January 22, which was lost 8-1, but does not count as an official international match. In March 2017, the team took part again in the Cyprus Cup , where they among other things on the European Championship participants Belgium (2: 2) and Italy (6: 0, one of the biggest defeats of the Italians) as well as North (1: 0) and in the final South Korea (1-0) scored and won the tournament for the first time. On April 10, they lost in Skien to runner-up European champions Norway 1: 2. There was also a gathering from June 5 to 13 with an international match against England on June 10 that was lost 4-0. The immediate EM preparations will then begin on July 3rd in Magglingen .

The hotel Fletcher Doorwerth in Doorwerth was based in the Netherlands .

European Championship finals

Venues and district (blue)

At the draw on November 8, 2016, Switzerland was assigned to Pot 2 as the best newcomer. In the first game in group C, Switzerland will meet neighboring Austria , who also qualified for the first time, then Iceland and France . Against France, the balance is negative: of the previous 20 games against the French, only four have been won and the points shared four times, but twelve lost. The last win against the French, Switzerland's first official opponent, was on August 14, 2002. Against the Icelanders there were four wins and a draw in two defeats in seven games, one defeat only being counted by the Icelandic Federation. Against Austria there were eleven wins, one draw and only one defeat in 13 games, although five wins by the Swiss Association are not counted. The only defeat against Austria was on May 19, 1996 in qualifying for the European Championships in 1997 and 2001 .

The first final game in Group C was lost against Austria by a goal by Nina Burger with 0: 1. The Swiss also fell behind in the second game against Iceland, but were able to equalize ten minutes later and turn around completely in the second half. This was the first time they won a European Championship finals game and with a win in the last game they still had the chance to reach the quarter-finals. After an emergency brake from French Eve Périsset , who received the red card , Ana Maria Crnogorčević scored the opening goal on Martina Moser's presentation . The Swiss were able to defend this against ten French women until the 76th minute when goalkeeper Gaëlle Thalmann was only able to steer a free kick taken by Abily into her own goal. The subsequent efforts to achieve the winning goal were unsuccessful, so that the Swiss were eliminated as third party. After the European Championship, record national players Martina Moser, Caroline Abbé , Vanessa Bürki and substitute goalkeeper Stenia Michel ended their international careers.
