preparation

The Austrian team at the friendly against Denmark on July 8, 2017

After the successful qualification, the Austrians played against Germany for the first time and lost 2: 4, but showed a good performance. In March 2017, the team again took part in the Cyprus Cup , which was won the previous year. After a 0-0 win against South Korea , which was played for the first time, and a 3-0 win against New Zealand , which was also played for the first time, the Austrians missed the final with a 3-1 defeat against European Championship participants Scotland and only played for 7th place against EM newcomer Belgium . Since the score was 1: 1 after 90 minutes, there was a penalty shoot-out, which was lost 3: 2. On April 11th, the Austrians played in Milton Keynes against England and lost 3-0. On June 13, they lost a game in Deventer against the hosts of the European Championship, the Netherlands, also with 0: 3 in preparation for the European Championship . On July 8, they won 4-2 against Denmark in Wiener Neustadt .

Knockout round

Quarter finals

There were only four games between Austria and Spain before the European Championship - the fewest of all quarter-final pairings - of which the Austrians could not win any. The last game between the two on February 10, 2015 ended in a draw, three games before that were lost, the first two of them within five days in October 2009 in qualifying for the 2011 World Cup. Both will also meet again in the upcoming qualification for the 2019 World Cup on each other.

Semifinals

There were previously three games against Denmark, two of which were won and one lost. Most recently, both met in the immediate EM preparation and the Austrians won 4-2 (see preparation). In the semifinals, the Austrians missed four penalties: first Sarah Puntigam in the game and then three teammates on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. On the other hand, since three Danes scored on penalties, the European Championship ended for the Austrians.
