qualification

For the African Nations Cup, which served as in previous years as a qualification for the World Cup finals, to Cameroon had in two games in June 2018 the second qualifying round against the Republic of Congo qualify both with 5: were 0.

National coach Joseph Brian Ndoko nominated 21 players for the tournament in Ghana , including 17 players who were already in the squad for the 2015 World Cup .

Cameroon met Mali in their first game and won 2-1 after trailing 1-0. The second game against Algeria was won 3-0. With a 1-1 draw against tournament hosts Ghana , which Christine Manie secured with a converted penalty, Cameroon became group winners. In the semi-finals, the team met Nigeria , against which Cameroon had lost in the final two of the last two events. Since both teams failed to score in 120 minutes this time, the penalty shootout had to decide, in which Nigeria prevailed 4-2 and qualified for the World Cup finals. In the game for third place, Cameroon met their group opponents Mali again and secured the last African World Cup ticket with a 4: 2.

At least 21 players were used during the tournament and the two qualifying games. Six players (goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom , Raissa Feudjio , Christine Manie , Ajara Nchout , Gabrielle Onguéné and Claudine Meffometou Tcheno ) were used in all seven games.

The Cameroonians scored a total of 20 goals in seven games. The most goals were scored by Gabrielle Onguéné (5, including 3 in qualifying) as well as Ninon Abena and Ajara Nchout (4 each, including 2 each in qualifying). A total of nine Cameroonian players met in the seven games.

Despite the successful qualification, national coach Joseph Ndoko was replaced by Alain Djeumfa on January 27, 2019 .

Venues for the Cameroonians

For the World Cup group draw that took place on December 8, 2018, Cameroon, like the other two African teams, was allocated to Pot 4 based on its placement in the FIFA world rankings of December 7, 2018. The team could thus be drawn as world champions USA, Germany or host France. But it was drawn by Canada, the host of the last World Cup, Oceania champions New Zealand and European champions Netherlands, the only group with two current continental champions. There was a previous game against New Zealand, in the group stage of the 2012 Olympics, which was lost 3-1 and was New Zealand's first win at the Olympics. The Cameroonians had not played against Canada and the Netherlands before. At the U-17 World Cup in 2016 , however, there was a group game between Canada and Cameroon, which the young Canadians won 3-2. But both were eliminated after the preliminary round.
