Viking clap

A Viking Clap is a special sequence of claps. This became popular in the wake of the 2016 European Football Championship with fans of the Icelandic national football team , who celebrated their team's victories with it. Host France also used this form of clapping after the EM semi-final victory over Germany.

The origin is the Huh-Clap from the Scottish FC Motherwell, which is part of the catch song there.

In 2014 this part was adopted by Finnish fans.

A variant of this special rhythmic clapping - without "Hú" - has been part of the repertoire of the 1. FC Magdeburg fan scene since about 2011 .

The special form of clapping received a lot of media attention and was described as a viral phenomenon, the appropriation by France was controversial.

The Viking Clap works as follows: the team faces the audience, both with their arms raised. Two drum beats are followed by clapping and "Hú" is called out. The pause between the claps gets shorter and shorter and drum beats and clapping faster.
