European Women's Football Championship 2013 / Sweden
This article covers the Swedish national team at the 2013 European Women's Football Championship in Sweden . The selection team did not have to qualify as "hosts".
preparation
The international season began for the Swedish selection with participation in the annual Algarve Cup in Portugal . There the team remained undefeated during the entire tournament after the end of regular time, but after one win and two draws in the group stage behind the United States, it was only enough for the game for third place, which was lost to Norway on penalties . Nevertheless, the Swedes provided the top scorer with the triple successful Kosovar Asllani , who was tied with the American Alex Morgan .
After a test match against Iceland in April, which ended with a 2-0 win with two goals from Lotta Schelin , the first preparatory phase for the final finding of the team began in June. On June 1st, Norway was selected and reciprocated with a 2-1 victory for the defeat in spring, on June 19th a meeting with Brazil was on the agenda, which ended 1-1. A few days before the final game against Denmark on July 10th, the selection for the final preparatory game on July 4th was played by the English women's selection and won 4-1.
Contingent
Over the course of the year, 24 players (as of June 1, 2013) were used in the selection team under the selection coach Pia Sundhage . Emma Berglund from Umeå IK , who had previously played in all five international matches of the year, had to cancel in April due to a torn cruciate ligament . Another failure followed at the end of May when her club mate Hanna Folkesson also had to cancel participation in the tournament due to a ligament injury she had suffered in preparation for the international match in Norway. Sundhage reacted a few days later with the subsequent nomination of the young international players Marija Banušić and Lina Hurtig for the Brazil international game in order to enable them to make the leap into the EM squad.
Six days after the 1-1 draw with Brazil, Sundhage announced their final squad for the finals. She did without the two young players, instead Jenny Hjohlman and Therese Sjögran were among the 23 selected players. In particular, the nomination of the 182-time national player Sjögran was surprising, as she had been out for a long time due to injury and could not fight for a regular place even with her club LdB FC Malmö in the time before the finals . According to her own statements, she did not count on it, when she last worked for the national team in March 2012, and already bought tickets for the final as a spectator. Sundhage justified the nomination in particular with her routine and experience. With an average age of 27.8 years (at the start of the tournament), the Swedish squad is the oldest of all EM participants.
