European Championship finals

Denmark met hosts Sweden in the opening match in group A and Italy and Finland in the other group matches . The Danes also played against Sweden and Finland in the group stage at the 2005 European Championship , where they were eliminated at the time due to the direct comparison against Finland. They last played against Italy in the group stage at the 2001 European Championships , which they finished as group winners, but then lost to Sweden in the semi-finals.

After an opening draw against Sweden, there was an unfortunate defeat against Italy and another draw against Finland, so that the Danes finished 3rd in the group again like in 2009 and had to wait two days for the results of the other teams. The chances of reaching the quarter-finals were lower than in 2009 when you had 3 points, because only if Iceland and the Netherlands had parted ways and England and Russia had lost their third game, Denmark would have been in the quarter-finals. Since Iceland won against the Netherlands, Denmark had to hope for defeats by England and Russia, but since Russia and Spain were separated 1: 1 while England lost to France, the lot had to be decided between Denmark and Russia, which was in favor of Denmark.

In the quarter-finals, Denmark was able to prevail on penalties against France and for the first time since 2001 reach the semi-finals of a European Championship. Opponent there was to be the team from Norway . Denmark fell behind in the 3rd minute, but then dominated the game for a long time and came to an equalizer three minutes before the end of regular time. The Danes also made the game in extra time, but could not score and then had to go to penalties as they did against France. There the Norwegians had the better shooters, so that Denmark was eliminated from the tournament.
