European Championship finals

The Russian team met in preliminary group C as in 2001 and 2009 against England and as in 1997 against France and Spain .

The Russians had no chance against France in the first game and lost 3-1. Against England they took the lead in the first half and defended it until stoppage time, in which the Englishmen managed to equalize. Third place was achieved through a final 1-1 draw against Spain and with the same number of points as Denmark, the team had to rely on the luck of the draw to reach the quarter-finals. This was however favored by the Danes and so Russia was eliminated.
