Margrét Rannveig Ólafsdóttir (born July 6, 1976 in Reykjavík ) is a former Icelandic football player . Margrét, who plays in midfield and attack , was a regular player for the Icelandic national team between 1993 and 2007 and was at times their record player. She was the first Icelander to play 50 internationals. At club level, she only played for record champions Breiðablik Kópavogur in Iceland and celebrated several championships and cup victories there, scoring the decisive goal three times in the cup final.

Career

society

Margrét made his debut at the age of 15 on June 2, 1991 for Breiðablik Kópavogur on the first day of the Icelandic league, missing only four games and was instant champion with the club, but could not contribute a goal. The following year the title could be defended and Margrét scored four goals. But they lost both the cup final and the Supercup final to ÍA Akranes . In 1993 they won the Supercup at the start of the season, but in the league it was only enough for runner-up after Ásthildur Helgadóttir , one of the pillars of the team, left the club and switched to rival KR Reykjavík , and in the cup they failed in the semi-finals. After that she was voted “Player of the Year” in the “Young Player” category. In 1994 she achieved the double of championship and cup victory, where she scored the only goal in the cup final. At the start of the 1995 season they lost the Supercup game against KR, but were able to defend the championship, where they became top scorer with 13 goals. In the cup, however, they lost in the semi-finals against KR. In 1996 they won the Supercup 3-0 against Valur at the start of the season, where they managed to score 2-0. In the league, she scored only four goals and missed two games for the first time since her first season, but the championship was defended without losing points and won the cup with a 3-0 win against KR. The 1997 season began with a 3-1 loss to KR in the Supercup and the league was finished as runner-up, where she was fourth-best goalscorer with 10 goals. The trophy, however, was defended by a 2-1 win against Valur. With a 4: 1 in the Supercup against KR, they started the 1998 season promisingly, but only finished third in the league. With a 3-2 in the cup final against KR, in which she scored the decisive goal, there was still a conciliatory conclusion. The year 1999 was then less successful. Although they were able to improve by one place in the league, they lost the cup final with 1: 3 against KR. With three goals in the semifinals in a 5-1 win over Grindavík, she played a key role in making it into the final. A year later she was the last time champion and then scored the decisive goal in the cup final for the third time. The following two seasons were then not very successful with second and fourth places in the championship and elimination in the quarter-finals and semi-finals in the cup, whereby the 1: 6 quarter-final defeat against old rivals KR was particularly painful. On September 3, 2003, she played her last league game. In twelve seasons she was missing in only ten games and scored 79 goals in 156 games. There were also 21 goals in 30 cup games and two goals in six Supercup games.

In 2001 she also played in the newly founded US professional league Women's United Soccer Association for Philadelphia Charge . There she reached the play-off semi-finals in which she lost 2: 3 after extra time against Atlanta Beat .

National team

Margrét played eight international matches for the Icelandic U-17 team at the Nordic Cup in 1991 and 1992 , where the Icelandic women finished fifth. In 1993 she took part in the Nordic Cup with the U-21 team in the older age group, but lost the game for 7th place against the German team in extra time.

Margrét played her first international match with Ásthildur Helgadóttir on September 6, 1993 at the age of 17 in a 1-0 win in the Icelanders' first international game against Wales and was immediately in the starting line-up as in her other games. But she also played in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and then in 2000 for the U-21 team. By the end of her career, she was not used in only four international A matches and was only substituted four times during this time. In her fourth international match, she scored her first international goal in a 3-0 win against Greece , and in 1995 she became the first Icelander to score a goal in four consecutive games.

On April 8, 2000, she beat Vanda Sigurgeirsdóttir's record with her 38th international match and extended it to 51 games by the end of her career. On August 18, 2001 she wore the captain's armband for the only time for the missing regular captain Ásthildur Helgadóttir . On September 22, 2002, she played her last international match in the 0-1 draw against England in the second leg of the World Cup relegation. Six days earlier, she was the first Icelander to make her 50th international match in the first leg. With her 51 internationals she remained a record player until June 14, 2003 and was then replaced by Ásthildur Helgadóttir, with whom she had played 42 times. With eight international goals, she is still in eleventh place on the list of goalscorers in 2016 together with Ásta Breiðfjörð Gunnlaugsdóttir , the first record scorer .

For a European Championship or World Cup finals, she was never able to qualify with Iceland. In qualifying for the European Championship in 1995 , they failed in the quarter-finals to England , where they had scored the only goal for Iceland in the 1: 2 first leg defeat. They were not qualified for the 1995 World Cup either. In qualifying for the European Championship in 1997 , the German team was too strong in the play-offs and the first leg was the first international game in which they were not in the squad. The qualification for the EM 2001 they finished in last place and in the qualification for the World Cup 2003 the Icelanders failed in the playoff games to England, after which they ended their career. It was only after their playing days that the Icelanders were able to qualify for the 2009 European Championship for the first time .
