Guðrún Sóley Gunnarsdóttir (born September 15, 1981 ) is a former Icelandic soccer player . The central defender was used in the Icelandic national team between 1999 and 2009 and took part in the 2009 European Women's Football Championship . Shortly thereafter, she had to end her career due to a head injury sustained at the EM. At club level she played in Iceland for KR Reykjavík and Breiðablik Kópavogur and in Sweden for Djurgården Damfotboll .

Career

society

Guðrún made her debut just under a month before her 15th birthday on August 12, 1996 for KR Reykjavík in the Icelandic league when she came on as a substitute in the second half at 7-2 against ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar . In the course of the season that KR finished as runner-up, she came to two more games. In 1997 she was used in ten of 14 league games, also scored one goal and became champions for the first time with KR. In the cup they failed in the semi-finals against city rivals Valur, but were able to win the Supercup against Breiðablik. In 1998 she was used in all league games and was able to defend the championship with KR, but lost in the cup final and Supercup against Breiðablik. In 1999 the championship was defended undefeated and the cup won against rival Breiðablik. In the following year Breiðablik was able to turn the tables and KR was only the runner-up and the final in the cup.

From 2001 to 2005 she studied at the University of Notre Dame , where she played for the “Notre Dame Fighting Irish”.

In 2001, she was only able to take part in the first six games of the season in Iceland and was substituted in the sixth game, her 50th league game in a row, after 31 minutes. KR was then runner-up again and was eliminated in the cup semi-finals. In 2002 she was used in the first four games, but substituted in the fourth game after 20 minutes. It was not used again until just under a month later in the seventh game, but was then missing again from the eleventh game. In just eight games, however, she scored two league goals for the first time and KR was champion again. In the only lost game, a home defeat against ÍBV, she was not there. In the cup, she was only able to take part in the 6-1 quarter-final victory against Breiðablik, the final her teammates then won without them with 4: 3 against rival Valur. In 2003 she was only able to play in the first half of the season and was then missing in the quarter-finals, which were lost 2-4. But KR was able to defend the championship. In 2004 she lost to Valur in the Supercup at the beginning of the season, only missing the fourth in the first nine league games, but then the rest of the season and the lost cup semi-finals. For the first time in eight years, KR had to settle for third place in the league among the first two teams. In 2005 she was only absent from one league game, but the season went even worse for KR, because they were now only fourth and then lost 4-1 to Breiðablik in the cup final.

For the 2006 season, she then moved to long-term rivals Breiðablik, but was only runner-up there and lost in the cup final on penalties against Valur. In 2007 she became team captain and was used in all league games for the first time since 2000, now even 16 after the league was increased by one club. She also scored six goals, more than any other season. For Breiðablik only the third place jumped out and in the cup semi-final they lost 3: 7 against their old club.

Guðrún then returned to KR for the 2008 season and was used in all 18 games of the now extended to ten teams league, but was only runner-up in the end. However, the cup was won by a 4-0 final win against Valur after they had lost the Supercup game against Valur at the beginning of the season.

For the 2009 season she was loaned to Sweden and played 17 games in Damallsvenskan for Djurgården Damfotboll . After being noticed by US scouts there, she was offered a contract for the first season of the new WPS . Due to a head injury suffered at the 2009 European Championship, which subsequently turned out to be serious, she had to end her career and could not finish the season with Djurgården. A comeback attempt four years later was unsuccessful.

National team

Guðrún played thirteen international matches for the Icelandic U-17 team at the Nordic Cup in 1996, 1997 and 1998 . In 1997 she also played a game with the U-19 team. In 1998 and 1999 she took part in the Nordic Cup in the older age group with the U-21 team. Immediately after the 1999 Nordic Cup, she played again in six games for the U-19 team in the first and second qualifying rounds for the U-18 European Women's Football Championship in 2000 , but could not qualify with her team for the final round .

Her first international match played Guðrún on October 14, 1999 at the age of 17 in the 5-0 defeat in qualifying for the 2001 European Championship against defending champions Germany . She was substituted on in the 65th minute. She was then immediately a regular player and played the next seven games over the full 90 minutes, but in between played with the U-21 team at the Nordic Cup 2000. Then she had an international break of one year in which she played two games was not nominated, but did not play any league games in Iceland while the international matches were taking place. After the break, she came on for the second and final time against Spain on September 30, 2001 . After that, she was in the starting line-up in all the games in which she was used, even if there were breaks from one to four important games where she was not in the squad. In 2002 she took part in the Nordic Cup for the last time with the U-21 team.

On October 8, 2006, she was substituted for the first time in her 33rd international match in a 2-1 draw against the USA , which only happened three times after that. On March 12, 2008 she scored in her 46th international match, the game for 7th place at the Algarve Cup in the 90th minute, her only international goal to make it 3-0 against Finland . On August 21, she played her 50th international match as the ninth Icelander.

Until then, Iceland was never able to qualify for a European Championship or World Cup. In qualifying for the European Championship in 2009 , the Icelanders were able to prevail in the playoff games against Ireland and qualify for a final round for the first time. In Finland they faced France in their first final match and lost 3-1. Other opponents were runner-up European champions Norway and defending champions Germany , but they only lost 1-0 to each. Iceland was thus the team that conceded the fewest goals against eventual European champions Germany. Due to a head injury she suffered at the European Championship, she did not play any more international matches. So her national team career ended with the 65th international match as it had started - with a defeat against Germany. In her 65 international matches, she had only scored one goal, but received only one yellow card as a central defender .
