Foxborough (also Foxboro ) is a place in Norfolk County in the US state of Massachusetts , 35 km southwest of Boston . In 2010 the place had 16,693 inhabitants. Foxboro is best known for the Gillette Stadium , home of the New England Patriots ( National Football League ) and the New England Revolution ( Major League Soccer ).

The place is namesake for the automation company Foxboro .

history

The first settlers settled in today's urban area in 1704. In 1778 the city was founded. The city is named after Charles James Fox , a British statesman.

Culture and sights

In the immediate vicinity of the urban area is the Neponset Reservoir , in which the Neponset River rises and which is particularly popular with anglers.

Sports

The New England Patriots are based in Foxborough, making it the smallest town with an NFL team.

In 1999 there were four preliminary round and one semi-final game of the Women's World Cup and in 2003 two preliminary round and two quarter-final games of the Women's World Cup took place at Gillette Stadium . In 2016, three Copa América Centenario games (two preliminary round and one quarter-final game) were played there.

In addition, the New England Revolution professional team from the Major League Soccer (North American Football League) comes from Foxborough. The team plays at Gillette Stadium.
