history

The Wamsutta site (19-NF-70) on Neponset is assigned to Paleo-Indians . It has been dated to (10210 ± 60 BP ).

The records begin in 1619 when the British started trading wool on Thompson's Island and the Indians used the river to offer their skins for sale.

The upper reaches of the Neponset River at Foxborough, Walpole and Norwood drops 228 ft (69  m ) over a length of 12  mi (19  km )  , making the river famous in the first years of the Industrial Revolution . Already in 1635 Israel Stoughton built the first dam on the Neponset River for his flour mill . This was only the second dam in the entire New World . In 1640 the Gulliver's Creek shipyard opened , and in 1673 John Trescott built a sawmill on the river. The current of the Neponset River supplied the country's first grain mill , a black powder factory , a paper mill and the Revere Copper Company with energy.

In 1765, Dr. James Baker and Irish immigrant John Hannon founded a chocolate factory in the Lower Mills district in what would later become the Boston borough of Dorchester , which later became known as Baker's Chocolate . In 1770, Daniel Vose's department stores in Lower Mills reached their peak. Shipbuilding and commercial shipping were the most important industries in the estuary. In 1773, George Clark built a paper mill on the remains of Trescott's sawmill, which became the Tileston and Hollingsworth Paper Mill in 1836 . In 1826 the river became the terminus of the Granite Railway , the first commercial railroad in the United States. The Neponset River was instrumental in establishing and developing the city of Walpole .

environment

After extensive renovation , the Neponset River is now cleaner than it was 20 years ago. There are currently two dams preventing fish from swimming up the river, but there is public pressure to remove them. The river and its entire catchment area are increasingly being protected and developed as recreational areas for the benefit of local residents. Many recommendations of the Lower Neponset River Reservation Master Plan from 1966 have been implemented, including the renaturation of previously filled areas. 66 acres (267,093 ) of land was allocated for the construction of the Pope John Paul II Park Reservation , which opened in 2001. On Squantum Point in Quincy, the 28 Acre was (101,172 sqm) complete the first construction phase of the Squantum Point Park on a former airfield of the US Navy completed in spring 2,001th In 2003, 4km of the Lower Neponset River Trail opened .
