Named after John Paul II. Named territory Pope John Paul II Park Reservation or shortly Pope Park is a 66 acres (26.7 hectares ) of large State Park in Boston district of Dorchester in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . The park is administered by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and is part of the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston . There used to be a landfill and a drive-in cinema on the site of today's protected area . Designation as a state park is part of the Lower Neponset River Master Plan .

There are many open areas in the park with picnic areas and playgrounds . There are several hiking trails , including the Lower Neponset River Trail . There are also opportunities to play football , fish , run and watch birds . The park borders directly on the Neponset River . The DCR has restored an area with salt marshes in the protected area and replanted locally occurring trees and bushes. Today the area attracts an increasing variety of birds , including great blue herons and great blue herons .
