There are regular guided tours as well as the opportunity to explore the site on your own.

Historical background

The town of Lynn was founded in 1629 and attracted leather and iron companies early on. Shoe production began in 1635 with handmade shoes, which were often made at home during the winter months. In 1750, Welsh immigrant John Adam Dagyr brought improved technology to the city that could produce high quality women's shoes. By the early 1800s, the footwear industry had become a major part of the city's economy, supplying the entire United States from nearby seaports . Mechanization, emerging in the 1850s, created job opportunities that attracted workers from all over New England and later Europe .

In 1882 Elihu Thomson brought the electricity business to Lynn. His experiments finally led to the founding of General Electric in 1892 together with Thomas Edison . Shoemaking declined more and more in the 1920s and 1930s as General Electric continued to expand. During the Second World War , the first jet engine in the United States was built in Lynn in the strictest of secrecy . These and other stories are clearly presented and made tangible by the exhibits in the visitor center.
