The Riverway is a parkway in Boston in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is part of the system of the Emerald Necklace , which was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1890s and in which several parks and parkways are connected.

The Riverway begins at the Boston Landmark Center in the Back Bay Fens and follows the course of the Muddy River south to Olmsted Park . The street and the attached park form the western boundary of Boston to the neighboring Brookline . Both the street and the park are popular and often used by residents of both cities.

Wetlands were converted into parkland to build the road . Olmsted also diverted the river and then shaped the banks, creating a connection to the Emerald Necklace. The steep banks and corners overgrown with wood retain a rural feeling to this day, so that the busy streets can be hidden. The Muddy River meanders along internationally known medical, cultural and educational institutions to the Charles River . There is a historic bridle path along the route , some of Olmsted's famous bridges and a stone pavilion at Chapel Street Bridge . The Riverway is an alternative route to the busy pedestrian areas along Brookline Avenue and the adjacent streets, but it is also simply a place to relax.
