The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge in Boston connects the underground city freeway with Interstate 93 and US Highway 1 . The structure was erected between 1997 and 2002 as part of the major urban development project Big Dig . The bridge spans the Charles River with a total of ten lanes and at 56 m is one of the widest cable-stayed bridges in the world. The structural concept of the building, which is distinctive due to a new type of cable guide, was developed with the advice of Swiss professor Christian Menn . The bridge is named after Boston civil rights activist Leonard P. Zakim and the Battle of Bunker Hill .

construction

Cable arrangement on the pylon

The main bridge has five openings with spans of 39.6 m and 34.1 m in the southern side fields, 227 m in the main field and 76.2 m and 51.8 m in the northern side openings. The length between the two-sided joints is 430 m.

The two pylons of the double-hipped cable-stayed bridge are λ-shaped and are arranged centrally over the eight lanes of the I 93. Two additional side lanes of a ramp are on one side, to the east, next to the pylons, which are 98.4 m high and made of reinforced concrete .

The bridge has an unusual cable guide in the fan system. Due to the eccentric lane arrangement, there are two rope levels in the main opening, which are anchored at the edge of the bridge girder at a rope distance of 6.0 m. In contrast to this, there is only one rope level anchored in the middle of the bridge girder in the two peripheral fields. In addition, the ropes are not only anchored in the vertical pylon tip, but also in the sloping pylon posts.

The main span of the carriageway girder is a lightweight construction with steel longitudinal girders for anchoring the ropes and with 3.0 m high steel cross girders arranged at right angles to them at a distance of 6.0 m. The deck is made of reinforced concrete . The side panels, on the other hand, have a heavy prestressed concrete superstructure .
