The Ted Williams Tunnel (English Ted Williams Tunnel , coll. Also Williams Tunnel ) is next to the Sumner Tunnel and Callahan Tunnel one of three highway tunnels under Boston Harbor in Boston in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It represents the last section of the Massachusetts Turnpike or I-90 and connects the South Boston district with Logan International Airport . The tunnel was named after the former American baseball player Ted Williams .
background
The Ted Williams Tunnel was the first major road link to be built as part of the Big Dig . It consists of 12 steel sections that were prefabricated in Baltimore and then transported to the construction site. There it was given a concrete cover. Shortly after its opening in 1995, it was initially only available to authorized vehicles in order not to let the traffic load increase too much during the ongoing construction work on Big Dig . It was not until 2003, 8 years after its opening, that it was permanently opened to all types of vehicles as part of the completion of the I-90 .
About 1.2 km of the tunnel are below the waterline. The toll , which is only payable in the south or at the toll gate in East Boston in the west direction, is between 3.50 and 5.25 US dollars , depending on the vehicle category .
