South Boston ( Southie ) is a densely populated area ( neighborhood ) of the city of Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . The area is south and east of the Fort Point Channel and borders Dorchester Bay . The district is one of the oldest in the entire United States, has a correspondingly extensive history and was formerly known as Dorchester Neck . Today its residents call him Southie . Known South Boston for its high proportion of Irish Americans from the working class , but also live there, many Poles and Lithuanians .
In South Boston is Dorchester Heights , where George Washington forced British troops to evacuate Boston during the American Revolutionary War . The district has some of the oldest houses in the United States, but land prices are now among the highest in the city.
history
Early developments
Geographically, the Dorchester Neck was an isthmus , a narrow strip of land that connected the mainland of the colonial settlement of Dorchester with Dorchester Heights . The land area on the eastern side was significantly increased by landfilling , which expanded the connection to the mainland in such a way that South Boston is no longer separated from it today. South Boston acquired its own identity alongside Dorchester , but both cities were gradually annexed by Boston from 1804 to 1870 .
American Revolution
During the American Revolutionary War, George Washington set up his cannons in Dorchester Heights and forced the British forces to evacuate Boston on March 17, 1776 . These left Boston and Fort William and Mary behind and withdrew to Halifax in Nova Scotia . The fort was replaced by Fort Independence , which can still be visited on Castle Island today , where Edgar Allan Poe was stationed and wrote the short story The Barrel Amontillado during this time .
20th century
During the 1970s, South Boston became known nationwide for its stance against court-ordered desegregation , which the district administration tried to circumvent by using buses to drive students to different parts of the city.
In the 1990s, the district was the focus of a case led by the United States Supreme Court that dealt with the right of gays and lesbians to take part in the parade on Saint Patrick's Day . The verdict was passed in favor of the parade sponsors, as the court upheld the South Boston Allied War Veterans' right to decide who can attend their annual parade. The 1996 case was dealt with by Dorchester-based author Paul Walkowski and attorney William Connolly in their book, From Trial Court to the United States Supreme Court.
In South Boston , there is a monument to veterans of the Vietnam War , which is believed that it is the first of its kind in the United States, 13 months before because Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC built and on 13 September 1981 inaugurated has been. It is located in Independence Square , but it is commonly called M Street Park .
21st century
In the recent past, the district has changed, in some cases very drastically, in the wake of the sharp rise in land prices. Especially in the region around City Point near Castle Island , land prices are among the highest in the city due to their proximity to the city center and due to gentrification . The western side of the district, the Lower End , also benefits from the location , although the gentrification process is slower there. Boston's first residential building, the Mcallen Building, is also located there, which received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) award in gold for an ecologically sustainable living concept. The City of Boston continues to invest in this area of the neighborhood.
Redevelopment of the coastal areas
The area north of First Street was massively restructured by the city administration under Mayor Thomas Menino together with the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA). As of September 2010, the Seaport Square project should cost 3 billion US dollars and, in particular, replace parking spaces between the courthouse and the convention center on an area of more than 585,000 m² with mixed-use structures.
This area, formerly known as the Seaport District , was redeveloped as the South Boston Waterfront following ongoing protests from Indians and local politicians . The Big Dig created a completely new road infrastructure, which among other things allowed the settlement of hotels and office buildings. The Boston Convention and Exhibition Center is on D Street , the Seaport Hotel and Seaport World Trade Center is on the Commonwealth Pier , and the new Institute of Contemporary Art towers north on Northern Avenue over Boston Harbor .
