The Leather District is located in the city of Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States and is formally a district of the Chinatown borough . In recent years, however, the area of only nine blocks has developed its own character and is officially designated by the city administration. Located between Chinatown , downtown, and Boston South Station , the district is essentially old tanneries that have been converted into residential and commercial buildings. Since these industries required a lot of space for offices, workrooms and exhibition space, the buildings are accordingly generously built and still offer large shop windows framed by wrought-iron columns, which characterize the Leather District .
The website registered on the district gives a more pragmatic definition:
"The Leather District = A loose juxtaposition of anonymous souls, going about their own business, in a quirky two block radius in downtown Boston."
"The Leather District = A loose collection of anonymous souls who go about their own business within a strange two-block radius of downtown Boston."
