Roslindale is a neighborhood ( neighborhood ) of the city of Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States .

geography

Expansion of the urban area

Roslindale is bounded by the neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain , Hyde Park , West Roxbury and Mattapan .

history

Roslindale is located 6  mi (9.66  km ) south-southwest of downtown Boston and was originally part of the independent city of Roxbury. In 1851 what is now Jamaica Plain , Roslindale and West Roxbury split off from Roxbury. In 1873 they all decided to join the city of Boston in a referendum.

In the 1860s, Roslindale was also called South Street Crossing because of the junction of the railway line with South Street . However, when the area requested its own zip code area, the South Street Crossing name was deemed unacceptable by the government. John Pierce , a well-traveled citizen of the city, suggested the name Roslindale , which reminded him of the historic town of Roslin near Edinburgh in Scotland . Pierce found the appendix dale (German valley ) fitting with a view of the surrounding hills. The composite Roslindale was proposed to the United States Postal Service and formally accepted.

The population of Roslindale grew steadily as it developed as a tram suburb. The railway was built after the Civil War and brought new momentum to the development of industrial areas. With the introduction of horse-drawn trams between Forest Hills and Dedham in the 1880s, the district continued to grow.

On March 14, 1887, a train on the Boston & Providence Railroad , consisting of a locomotive and nine passenger cars, was traveling in the direction of Boston with more than 200 passengers on a bridge in what is now the Arnold Arboretum on Bussey Street when it collapsed under the weight of the train . The last five cars piled on top of each other, causing 23 deaths and more than 100 injuries. This accident is considered to be one of the first major rail accidents in the United States and contributed to the regular inspection of railroad bridges in the United States.

In the 1920s, the cityscape that still dominates today was formed around the tree-lined Adams Park in the center. The edges of the district flow smoothly into the neighboring districts.
