Readville (Boston)

Readville (known as part of Dedham Low Plains from 1655 to 1847 ) has been a borough of Boston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States since 1867 . Readville is part of Hyde Park and was named after James Read , an early resident and owner of a cotton mill .

The district is bordered by Milton to the south and Dedham to the west. To get from Milton to Readville , one of several options is via Paul's Bridge , one of the oldest bridges in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts . The station Readville the MBTA binds the district to the local trains of the MBTA Commuter Rail at.

From the district you have a good view of the Great Blue Hill and the Blue Hills Reservation . The Neponset River also flows nearby .

history

In Readville was during the Civil War , the Camp Meigs , which as a training base for soldiers of the Union Army served, including the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry , which in the movie Glory was portrayed (1989). The 2nd Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry was also trained at Camp Meigs , half of which consisted of soldiers recruited in California who were sent by sea to Readville for training and then to Virginia for the war. At today's Meigs Field there are small monuments and plaques commemorating this. Every year on July 4th the Field Day Picnic takes place there.

For most of the 20th century, the district was dominated by immigrants from Ireland and Italy , but today it is mainly inhabited by Afro-Americans , Hispanics and Latinos . The Boston Mayor Thomas Menino lived too long in Readville .

Buildings

The Blue Hill Community Church is a nondenominational church that was founded in the 1888th Phillips Brooks preached his last speech there, and the Christmas carol O Little Town of Bethlehem was sung for the first time at this point. It was in church that Samuel Francis Smith first read his poem America , which was later put to music and known as My Country, 'Tis of Thee .

The St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church is the largest local church .

In the early 20th century, Readville had a popular trotting track , the Readville Trotting Park , which was later converted into a warehouse and distribution center for the Stop & Shop supermarket chain . Today there are warehouses used by several companies.

In Readville also include extensive maintenance hangars for locomotives and wagons were New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad , which were closed in the early 1960s, however. Today the CSX Corporation still maintains a freight terminal on Prescott Street and an MBTA maintenance building for passenger cars is located in Wolcott Square .
