The Hotel Pennsylvania is a hotel located on 401 7th Avenue (15 Penn Plaza) in New York City . It is across from Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden .

history

The Pennsylvania Hotel was designed and built by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and operated by the Statler Hotels chain. It was opened on January 25, 1919 and at that time had 2200 hotel rooms with bathrooms. At the time it was the largest hotel in the world. The executive architecture firm McKim, Mead, and White had built the train station opposite, which was torn down in 1963 to make way for Madison Square Garden. Today the station is underground.

The hotel has made some name changes. In 1948 it was renamed Hotel Statler by Statler Hotels, which was involved from the start of construction. After the Hilton hotel chain bought all 17 Statler hotels, the hotel was renamed The Statler Hilton in 1954, which it kept until the 1980s when Hilton sold the hotel. It was renamed back to The New York Statler, by Dunfey Hotels, a hotel company owned by the Aer Lingus airline . After Penta Hotels acquired the building in 1984, the name was changed to The New York Penta until it was sold by Penta in 1992 and returned to its original name, Hotel Pennsylvania. The current owner is the Vornado Realty Trust real estate trust fund .

Temporary plans for the demolition of the hotel, which was to give way to an office building, were dropped by Vornado in February 2013.

Trivia

The character Statler from the Muppet Show is named after the hotel (when it was still known under the name "Statler Hilton").

The satirical show The Opposition on Comedy Central with Jordan Klepper is recorded in the hotel.
