Desegregation refers to the abolition of segregation , especially the so-called " racial segregation ".

In the United States desegregation took place in the 1960s as a result of mass protests and the decision of the Supreme Court in the case of Brown vs. Board of Education . In the Republic of South Africa , desegregation only began in the mid-1990s after the end of apartheid policy .

Desegregation has been a major issue in the United States in the military and schools. In the Republic of South Africa, desegregation also plays an important role in urban development.
