The US Highway 1 (short US 1 ) is a Highway , the north-south direction over a total length of 3846 km along the American US east coast by several states from Florida to Maine runs. In Massachusetts , the route begins in the south on the border with Rhode Island in the city of Attleboro and continues north via Boston to the city of Salisbury on the state border with New Hampshire .

The route south of Boston is also known as the Boston-Providence Turnpike , while some sections north of the city are known as the Northeast Expressway and Newburyport Turnpike .

Route

The US 1 crosses the state border from Rhode Island at Attleboro and then runs largely parallel to I-95 through the cities of North Attleborough , Plainville , Wrentham , Foxborough , Walpole , Sharon , Norwood and Westwood .

From there, the route is identical to I-95 to the intersection with I-93 , with which it is identical from Canton to downtown Boston . Directly after crossing the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge , US 1 separates from Interstate 93 and runs over the Tobin Bridge as the Northeast Expressway through the cities of Chelsea , Revere , Malden , Melrose , Saugus and Lynnfield .

From Lynnfield, US 1 again runs parallel to I-95 through Peabody , Danvers , Topsfield , Ipswich , Rowley , Newbury , Newburyport and Salisbury , before crossing the state line into New Hampshire .

history

The US 1 was built in Massachusetts during the 1930s in several sections, with both new routes being built and existing ones being expanded. A large part of the highway was initially two or three lanes in each direction and was only expanded to its current dimensions in the course of the following years. The route leads partially over the former components of the Lower Post Road .

Turnpikes

Most of US 1 consists of the two former toll roads Norfolk and Bristol Turnpike and Newburyport Turnpike . The older roads, to which the turnpikes were designed as bypass roads, now largely form the Massachusetts Route 1A .

Massachusetts Route C1

In the early 1930s, which was Route C1 shown as an alternative route to US 1 through the center of Boston, where the letter "C" for city street (english City route stands) and almost exclusively was used in Boston's environment. The C1 ran along Brookline Avenue , Beacon Street , now Route 28 , Charles Street , Lowell Street , Merrimac Street and Cross Street to the west end of the Sumner Tunnel .

In East Boston , the route continued on Porter Street and Chelsea Street on today's Route 1A . With the opening of Storrow Drive and the Central Artery in the 1950s, the C1 was relocated so that it partly ran on these new streets. In 1971, the C1 was dissolved, with the part south of the Charles River essentially assigned to US 1 and the part north of the river was largely assigned to Route 1A. The route of the US 1 was later shifted to the Southeast Expressway , so that today the former route of the C1 south of the river no longer has any numbering.

Relocation of the route in Boston

US 1 was a replacement for the originally planned route of I-95 along the Northeast Expressway north of the city center in the city of Boston until the 1970s . In the late 1980s, US 1 was moved to I-93 in anticipation of the 1994 World Cup , leaving the old route over VFW Parkway , Jamaicaway , Riverway and Storrow Drive through Dedham , Brookline , West Roxbury and other Boston neighborhoods has not been numbered since then.

Northeast Expressway

The Northeast Expressway is located north of downtown Boston and runs from the intersection of I-93 and US 1 in Charlestown over the Mystic River through Chelsea and Revere . While it is elevated at the beginning, it runs at ground level from north Chelsea and ends at the border between Revere and Saugus .

Originally the plans were to extend the road north from Saugus via Lynn and Lynnfield to Peabody , to end at what is now the junction between I-95 and Route 128 in Peabody. From 1955 to 1973, the line was designated as I-95 in anticipation of the expansion that ultimately never took place.
